Calhoun County, Arkansas
Calhoun County is a county located in the south central part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,368, making it the least populous county in Arkansas. The county seat is Hampton. Calhoun County is Arkansas's 55th county, formed on December 6, 1850, and named for John C. Calhoun, a Vice President of the United States. The county is part of the Camden, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area. History This area was initially developed for plantation agriculture, based on large gangs of slave workers. The population was majority enslaved African Americans before the American Civil War. After the Reconstruction era, there was increasing white violence against blacks as the minority attempted to assert dominance over the freedmen. From 1877 to 1950, whites lynched 10 African Americans in the county, mostly in the decades around the turn of the century. Several other counties in the state had higher rates of such murders. Calhoun County Courthouse (Arkansas)
The Calhoun County Courthouse is a courthouse in Hampton, Arkansas, the county seat of Calhoun County, Arkansas, Calhoun County, built in 1909. Located within downtown Hampton, the two-story brick building was designed by Frank W. Gibb, who designed 60 courthouses in Arkansas. The courthouse is both a historically and architecturally significant structure, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of this significance in 1976. Architecture Constructed by E. L. Koonce, the Calhoun County Courthouse is a two-story brick Georgian Revival structure with a five-story clock tower. The building is not particularly ornamented, with cut stone trim, including stone keystones above arched windows. Southern Arkansas University Tech
Southern Arkansas University Tech (SAU Tech) is a public community college in Calhoun County, Arkansas. History SAU Tech was created on April 5, 1967, as Southwest Technical Institute by Act 534 of the Arkansas Legislature. The purpose of the institute was to provide a technically trained workforce for the growing Highland Industrial Park where it was located. Seventy acres of land and six buildings at the Park were donated by the Brown Foundation of Houston, Texas which had purchased the former Shumaker Naval Ammunition Depot for redevelopment. Financing for renovation and equipping the facility was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The Arkansas State Board of Education operated the school until 1975 when, by an Act of the Arkansas Legislature, Southwest Technical Institute became Southern Arkansas University Tech under the governance of the Board of Trustees of Southern Arkansas University. Ouachita County ( ) is a county located in the south central part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,120. The county seat is Camden. Union County is a county located on the central southern border of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,639. The county seat is El Dorado. The county was formed on November 2, 1829, and named in recognition of the citizens' petition for a new county, which said that they were petitioning "in the spirit of Union and Unity." The northernmost segment of runs from Farm to Market Road 249 at the Texas state line near Bloomburg, Texas east to Highway 19 at Macedonia.
