Caledonia Vermont Senate District, 2002–2012
The Caledonia district is one of 16 districts of the Vermont Senate. The current district plan is included in the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2020 U.S. census, which applies to legislatures elected in 2022, 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030. The Caledonia district includes most of Caledonia County, and the Town of Newbury from Orange County. As of the 2020 census, the state as a whole had a population of 643,077. The Vermont Senate is the upper house of the Vermont General Assembly, the State legislature (United States), state legislature of the U.S. state of Vermont. The senate consists of 30 members elected from multi-member districts. Each senator represents at least 20,300 citizens. Senators are elected to two-year terms and there is term limit, no limit to the number of terms that a senator may serve. Wheelock, Vermont
Wheelock is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. The population was 759 at the 2020 census. History The town was named after Eleazar Wheelock, the founder of Dartmouth College. Through a provision of the college dating to , any full-time resident of Wheelock who is accepted as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College may attend the school entirely free of tuition. Between the 1890s and 2025, ten Wheelock Scholars attended Dartmouth College. Standing in the center of the village for many years was the old brick hotel, known as the Caledonia Spring House. In 1893, Myron D. Park, who served four years as a Wheelock selectman, sold the Caledonia Spring House to Marshall Way. The hotel was the site of a notorious murder on May 20, 1896, when owner Marshall Way killed his 44-year-old wife, Ellen Sheldon Way, in the dooryard. Waterford, Vermont
Waterford is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,268 at the 2020 census. History The town was formed by the Vermont charter on November 8, 1780, and was originally called Littleton, but the name was changed to Waterford in 1797. The town may have been named after Waterford, Ireland, or for the ford that ran across the Connecticut River in that area. Geography Waterford is in eastern Caledonia County on the Connecticut River, the eastern border of Vermont. Stannard is a New England town, town in Caledonia County, Vermont. The population was 208 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. The town has no paved roads. History Previously known as Goshen Gore (surveying), Gore No. 1, the town was incorporated as Stannard in honor of General George J. Stannard, a Union Army hero of the American Civil War, Civil War. Ryegate, Vermont
Ryegate is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,165 at the 2020 census. The town contains the villages of South Ryegate, East Ryegate, and Ryegate Corner. History One of the New Hampshire Grants, it was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth on September 8, 1763. Granted to Richard Jenness and 93 others, it was named Ryegate, a variant spelling of Reigate in Surrey, England. The first settlers were Aaron Hosmer and his family. History In 1763, Governor Benning Wentworth of Province of New Hampshire, New Hampshire gave a charter for the region to a group of proprietors, and the town was given the name Peacham (the etymology of the name is unclear). The original proprietors were speculators who surveyed the town, laid a few rudimentary roads, and divided it into lots, though the territory remained unsettled for some time. In 1775, settlers, primarily from Connecticut and Massachusetts, bought the lots and built homes, developing the land for agriculture. Redistricting
Redistricting in the United States is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries. For the United States House of Representatives, and state legislatures, redistricting occurs after each ten-year census.
