Caledonia, ON
Caledonia is a community located on the Grand River in Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada. It had a population of 12,179 as of the 2021 Canadian Census. Caledonia is within Ward 3 of Haldimand County. The Councillor elected for Ward 3 is Dan Lawrence. As of 2021, there were 4,310 private dwellings in Caledonia. Caledonia is located at the intersection of Highway 6 and Haldimand Highway 54 (within the town, these streets are called Argyle Street and Caithness Street respectively) on the Grand River. History Caledonia was once a small strip of land between Seneca and Oneida villages. The Oneida village was started by the Grand River Navigation Company, which laid out the village of Oneida on the south side of the Grand River. The Oneida village plot originally contained 16 acres and was named after the township where it began. Haldimand House
Haldimand House is an historic building in Caledonia, Ontario that is one of the oldest in the town. At the time of its construction it was the first in Haldimand County to receive a hotel license and was also the first commercial building in Haldimand County. Originally built as a stagecoach inn, Haldimand House has served as a hotel and bar, a boarding house, apartments and then a series of small retail establishments Early years In 1837, James Little started construction of a stagecoach inn that he would call Haldimand House. He named it after Sir Frederick Haldimand, Governor of Upper Canada. Shortly after beginning construction, Little received his Crown patents and was legally given possession of the land he was developing. Construction on the Haldimand House finished in 1839, a copy of James Little's house in Seneca Village. Caledonia Opera House
The Caledonia Opera House was a three-storey building located in small town Caledonia, Ontario, Caledonia from the 1830s until a fire which destroyed the building in 1947. 19th century When Ranald McKinnon came to Caledonia, Ontario, Caledonia in the 1830s there were very few buildings on what would become Caledonia's main street: Argyle Street. One of the few was a building known then as the Bryant Tavern, located on the corner of present-day Argyle Street North and Caithness Street East, where the Cornerstone Restaurant is now located. In the 1850s the Bryant Tavern became known as the Roper block as a druggist with the name Roper owned the building. McKinnon Park Secondary School
McKinnon Park Secondary School is a high school in the town of Caledonia, Ontario. It replaced Caledonia High School for the school year 1992/1993, which was converted into River Heights Public School. It temporarily served as a home to the new population of River Heights Public School in fall 1991 while renovations and an expansion were created. It is home to the SHSM (Specialist High Schools Major) program offering red seals (upon completion of the requirements) at graduation in hospitality, green industries, and construction. The 2022/2023 academic year saw over 700 students enrolled. The school is home to the largest Indigenous student body in the Grand Erie School District, at 29% or 260 students as of 2018/19. Most of these students come from the nearby Six Nations of the Grand River. William Lyon MacKenzie
William Lyon Mackenzie (March12, 1795 August28, 1861) was a Scottish-born Canadian-American journalist and politician. He founded newspapers critical of the Family Compact, a term used to identify the establishment of Upper Canada. He represented York County, Ontario, York County in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and aligned with Reform movement (Upper Canada), Reformers. He led the rebels in the Upper Canada Rebellion; after its defeat, he unsuccessfully rallied American support for an invasion of Upper Canada as part of the Patriot War. Although popular for criticising government officials, he failed to implement most of his policy objectives. He is one of the most recognizable Reformers of the early 19th century. Grand River Bridge (Ontario)
The Caledonia Bridge, also known as the Grand River Bridge (built 1927) is a road bridge located in Caledonia, Ontario, Canada on Argyle Street. The bridge is the only nine-span bridge of its kind in Canada and is considered the first reinforced concrete bridge of its type ever built. The bridge is on the Ontario Heritage Bridge List and is designated by the Haldimand County LACAC (Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee). The bridge is scheduled to be replaced by a new bridge due to structural damage and age. A number of bridge deficiencies were found requiring action. Caledonia Mill
The Caledonia Mill was a historic mill building located in Caledonia, Ontario, Canada. Built in 1846, it is a heritage property under the ''Ontario Heritage Act''. It was the last timber-frame water-powered mill along the Grand River in Ontario. In 2018 the mill was dismantled by Riverside properties and was rebuilt as an office complex. Highway 6 (Ontario)
King's Highway 6, commonly referred to as Highway 6, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. It crosses a distance of between Port Dover, on the northern shore of Lake Erie, and Espanola, on the northern shore of Lake Huron, before ending at the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 17) in McKerrow.
