Calcar Avis
The calcar avis, (calcarine spur) previously known as the hippocampus minor, is an involution of the wall of the lateral ventricle's posterior horn produced by the calcarine fissure. It is sometimes visible on ultrasound and can resemble a clot. Name The ridge was originally described by anatomists as the ''calcar avis'', while the ridge running along the floor of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle was described by various names, in particular as the hippocampus. A classical allusion was introduced later with the term ''pes hippocampi'', which may date back to Diemerbroeck in 1672, introducing a comparison with the shape of the folded back forelimbs and webbed feet of the Classical hippocampus (Greek: ἱππόκαμπος), a sea monster with a horse's forequarters and a fish's tail. The lateral ventricles are the two largest ventricular system, ventricles of the brain and contain cerebrospinal fluid. Each cerebral hemisphere contains a lateral ventricle, known as the left or right lateral ventricle, respectively. Félix Vicq d'Azyr (; 23 April 1748 – 20 June 1794) was a French physician and anatomist, the originator of comparative anatomy and discoverer of the theory of homology in biology. Biography Vicq d'Azyr was born in Valognes, Normandy, the son of a physician. He graduated in medicine at the University of Paris and became a renowned and brilliant animal and human anatomist and physician. From 1773 Vicq d'Azyr taught a celebrated course of anatomy at the Jardin du Roi, currently the Museum of Natural History, in Paris. In 1774 he was elected a member of the Académie des Sciences with the support of his friend Condorcet, the Perpetual Secretary. In this latter capacity, he was in charge of writing the eulogies of his colleagues. This he accomplished with great talent, thus winning a lifetime membership to the Académie française in 1788. Great Hippocampus Question
The Great Hippocampus Question was a 19th-century scientific controversy about the anatomy of ape and human uniqueness. The dispute between Thomas Henry Huxley and Richard Owen became central to the scientific debate on human evolution that followed Charles Darwin's publication of ''On the Origin of Species''. The name comes from the title of a satire the Reverend Charles Kingsley wrote about the arguments, which in modified form appeared as "the great hippopotamus test" in Kingsley's 1863 book for children, '' The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby''. IJsbrand Van Diemerbroeck
Isbrand van Diemerbroeck (also IJsbrand or Ysbrand) (13 December 1609 – 16 November 1674) was a Dutch physician, anatomist, and professor. Biography Isbrand van Diemerbroeck was born in Montfoort in 1609. He studied first in Utrecht, and then in Leiden under Daniel Heinsius and Otto Heurnius. He received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Angers. He worked in Nijmegen in 1635 and 1636, during the Black Death epidemic. He wrote about his experiences in treating the plague in his 1646 work ''De Peste''. He then went to Utrecht and married Elisabeth van Gessel on 18 October 1642. In 1649 he became a professor of medicine and anatomy at Utrecht University, where Regnier de Graaf was a student of his. He was twice rector of the University of Utrecht. He died in Utrecht.
