Cal York
Cal York, an amalgam of California and New York, was a pseudonymous name used in the American film magazine Photoplay that ran from 1911 to 1980. Popular entertainment scholar Anthony Slide considered it one of the most reliable voices in the old Hollywood gossip columns. York (presumably the editors) was the "columnist" for "Inside Stuff'',"'' and also a contributor to other parts of the magazine, including "Plays and Players." Not every film scholar seems aware of the pseudonym, as many quote York without noting the meaning behind the name. Slide notes that the surname York once morphed to Yorke, assuming a typo, but it may also have been an inside joke. He adds that toward the end of the magazine's life West Coast editoRichard Cuskellywrote as Cal York. By the 1970s ''Photoplay'' was still using the old name, but Slide considered it an echo of the past. ''Photoplay'' was one of the first American film fan magazines, its title another word for screenplay. It was founded in Chicago in 1911. Under early editors Julian Johnson and James R. Quirk, in style and reach it became a pacesetter for fan magazines. In 1921, ''Photoplay'' established what is considered the first significant annual movie award. For most of its run, it was published by Macfadden Publications. The magazine ceased publication in 1980. History ''Photoplay'' began as a short fiction magazine concerned mostly with the plots and characters of films at the time and was used as a promotional tool for those films. Anthony Slide
Anthony Slide (born 7 November 1944) is an English writer who has produced more than seventy books and edited a further 150 on the history of popular entertainment. He wrote a "letter from Hollywood" for the British ''Film Review'' magazine from 1979 to 1994, and he wrote a monthly book review column for ''Classic Images'' from 1989 to 2001. He is a member of the editorial board of the American Film Institute Catalog. Biography Born in Birmingham, England, on 7 November 1944, Slide began his professional involvement with the cultural and historical field of films in the mid-1960s, serving as honorary secretary of the Society for Film History Research and co-founding and serving as the first editor of the newsletter of the still-active Cinema Theatre Association.
