Caerdydd Penarth (Senedd Constituency)
; ) is a proposed six-member constituency of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ) to be used for the 2026 Senedd election. It was proposed following the 2026 review of Senedd constituencies, and will be a pairing of the two UK Parliament constituencies of Cardiff West and Cardiff South and Penarth. It is to have a Welsh-only name. Boundaries A Senedd constituency comprising the boundaries of the UK Parliament constituencies of Cardiff West and Cardiff South and Penarth, has been proposed by the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru for the 2026 election to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ). It was initially proposed using the English name ''Cardiff West, South and Penarth'' in September 2024. Cardiff South and Penarth () is a constituency of the Senedd. It elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post electoral system. It is typically a safe Labour seat. Constituency profile and voting The constituency was created for the first election to the Assembly, in 1999, with the name and boundaries of the Cardiff South and Penarth Westminster constituency. It is entirely within the preserved county of South Glamorgan. The next Senedd election is due to be held by 7 May 2026 to elect 96 members to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ). It will be the seventh devolved general election since the Senedd (formerly the National Assembly for Wales) was established in 1999. If held in 2026 it will also be the first election following current reforms to the voting system, which would increase the size of the Senedd from 60 members to 96, adopting a party-list voting system, reducing the number of constituencies to sixteen, and shortening its term from five years to four. The Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru () is a Welsh Government sponsored body, responsible for defining local government boundaries and Senedd constituency boundaries in Wales, also known as . Wales is divided into thirty-two constituencies of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which elect Members of Parliament to the House of Commons. At the 2024 United Kingdom general election in Wales, 27 Labour MPs, 4 Plaid Cymru MPs and 1 Liberal Democrat MP were elected. The Conservative Party lost all of their 13 MPs in Wales. This is a decrease from forty constituencies, last used in the general election of December 2019 which had resulted in 22 of the Welsh constituencies being represented by Labour MPs, 14 by Conservative MPs, and 4 by Plaid Cymru MPs. 2026 Review Of Senedd Constituencies
The 2026 review of Senedd constituencies was conducted between July 2024 and March 2025 by the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru. The Senedd Cymru (Members and Elections) Act 2024 legislated that the 2026 Senedd election should use 16 six-member constituencies, replacing the existing 40 constituencies and five regions currently used for the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ). The constituencies are required by the law to be contiguous pairings of the 32 UK Parliament constituencies used in Wales since the 2024 UK election. The commission were also required by the law to give constituencies a single name in both Welsh and English, unless it could be considered unacceptable for a single name. The Senedd constituencies and electoral regions () are the electoral districts used to elect members of the Senedd (MS; ) to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ), and have been used in some form since the first election of the then ''National Assembly for Wales'' in 1999. There are currently forty single-member constituencies and five four-member regions.
