CKWM-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting from Kentville, Nova Scotia at 94.9 FM owned by the Maritime Broadcasting System. The station currently plays an adult contemporary format branded on-air as ''Magic 94.9''. The station began broadcasting on March 14, 1965 as CKEN-FM. From 1981 to 1988, it was a station affiliate of CBC Stereo. On January 10, 2003, CKEN moved to sister station CKWM-FM’s 97.7 MHz frequency from 1490 AM. CKEN-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting from Kentville, Nova Scotia at 97.7 FM. The station currently plays a country format and is branded on-air as ''AVR'' (which is short for Annapolis Valley Radio). The station has been on the air since 1947. The station originally broadcast at 1490 AM, then moved to 1350 in 1953, then back to 1490 in 1979. In July 2002, the station received CRTC approval to move to 94.9 FM, but instead moved to 97.7 FM in 2003. CKWM-FM moved to 94.9 and became ''Magic 94.9''. Both stations are owned by the Maritime Broadcasting System. Rebroadcasters On November 15, 2011, MBS received CRTC approval to operate CKDY as a separate, locally originated station, with CKDY-1-FM continuing to repeat CKDY. Maritime Broadcasting System Limited, branded as MBS Radio, is a private Canada, Canadian broadcasting company owning 26 radio stations serving several communities in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. History MBS Radio was established in 1969 as Eastern Broadcasting Limited in Campbellton, New Brunswick and is currently owned by Rob Pace. The Canadian Communications Foundation (CCF) was a Canadian nonprofit organization which documented the history of broadcasting in Canada, particularly radio and television networks, programs and broadcasters. The organization was established in 1967 and announced that it would begin wrapping up its work in 2023. Since 1995, the organization distributed its collection via its website. Kentville
Kentville is an incorporated town in Nova Scotia. It is the most populous town in the Annapolis Valley. As of 2021, the town's population was 6,630. Its census agglomeration is 26,929. History Kentville owes its location to the Cornwallis River which, downstream from Kentville, becomes a large tidal river at the Minas Basin. The riverbank at the current location of Kentville provided an easy fording point. The Mi'kmaq name for the location was "Penooek". The ford and later the bridge in Kentville made the area an important crossroads for other settlements in the Annapolis Valley. Kentville also marked the limit of navigation of sailing ships.
