CGIL
The Italian General Confederation of Labour (, , CGIL ) is a national trade union centre in Italy. It was formed by an agreement between socialists, communists, and Christian democrats in the "Pact of Rome" of June 1944. In 1950, socialists and Christian democrats split forming UIL and CISL, and since then the CGIL has been influenced by the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and until recent years by its political heirs: the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS), the Democrats of the Left (DS) and currently the Democratic Party (PD). It has been the most important Italian trade union since its creation. It has a membership of over 5.5 million. The CGIL is currently the second-largest trade union in Europe, after the German DGB, which has over 6 million members. The Italian Labour Union (, ; UIL ) is a national trade union centre in Italy. It was founded in 1950 as a socialist, social democratic, republican, and laic split from the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL). It represents almost 2.2 million workers. The UIL is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). Maurizio Landini
Maurizio Landini (born 7 August 1961) is an Italian trade unionist. Since January 2019, he is the General Secretary of CGIL. He was also former general secretary of FIOM from 2010 to 2017. Landini is considered a socialist and is famous for his populist political style. Biography Landini was born in Castelnovo ne' Monti, near Reggio Emilia, in 1961. He was the second-last of five children; his father, who fought along with the Italian partisans during the World War II, was a ''cantoniere'', a road maintenance worker who needed to live near the workplace due to service requirements, while his mother was a housewife. Landini grew up in San Polo d'Enza and, after middle school, he attended the building's surveyor secondary school, but he was forced to leave it due to financial difficulties of his family, and started working when he was only 15 years old as an apprentice welder in a cooperative in the engineering sector in Reggio Emilia. Giuseppe Di Vittorio
Giuseppe Di Vittorio (11 August 1892 – 3 November 1957), also known as Mario Nicoletti, was an Italian trade union leader and communist politician. He was one of the most influential trade union leaders of the labour movement after World War I. He became president of the World Federation of Trade Unions. Early life Giuseppe Di Vittorio was born in Cerignola, Apulia, into a family of poor agricultural day laborers. After his father's death, Di Vittorio was forced to leave school and work as a day laborer. He joined the May 1904 general strike during which five workers were killed by troops in Cerignola. Di Vittorio was strongly influenced by the growth of peasants' organizations and the spread of socialist ideas, giving rise to his participation in the local young socialist organization in Cerignola. The Christian Associations of Italian Workers (''Associazioni Cristiane dei Lavoratori Italiani'', ACLI; alternatively translated as Italian Christian Workers' Association) are a widespread lay Catholic association in Italy. Its work is based on the Catholic social teaching. The ACLI were founded in 1944 in reaction to the decision by Catholic trade unionists to take part to the foundation of the unitary Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL). In 1948 ACLI leaders contributed to the foundation of the Italian Confederation of Workers' Trade Unions (CISL), a Christian-oriented split from the CGIL, which had come under Communist influence. General Confederation of Labour (, CGdL) was an Italian labor union, founded in 1906, under the initiative of socialist militants. Having survived the Fascist dictatorship and the Second World War as an underground organization, the CGL joined the cross-party CGIL labor federation in 1945. Achille Grandi
Achille Grandi (24 August 1883 – 28 September 1946) was an Italian politician and catholic syndicalist. Grandi was born in Como, Italy. In 1918 he entered the secretariat of the Confederazione Italiana dei Lavoratori CIL being one of its founding members, with Ulisse Carbone. He was elected CIL general secretary from 1922 to 1926 and brought the CIL up to 2 million members. In 1919 he was among the founding members of Partito Popolare Italiano becoming member of the parliament the same year. During fascism he didn't collaborate and survived working in a printing house.
