The French Democratic Confederation of Labour (, CFDT) is a national trade union center, one of the five major French confederations of trade unions, led since 2023 by . It is the second largest French trade union confederation by number of members (625,000) and recently becoming first in voting results for representative bodies, having traditionally been second. History The CFDT has its roots in Christian trade unionism of the French Confederation of Christian Workers (CFTC). After the Liberation of France, a left-wing minority, grouped in the Reconstruction tendency, led an internal debate in favour of the “deconfessionalization” seeking to secularise the CFTC and achieve greater autonomy from political and religious circles with which the confederation's leadership had been associated. François Chérèque
François Chérèque (1 June 1956 – 2 January 2017) was a French trade unionist, and leader of the French trade union CFDT (French Democratic Confederation of Labour or ''Confédération française démocratique du travail''). Early life François Chérèque was born in Nancy department of Lorraine. His father, Jacques Chérèque, served as the vice-president of the CFDT. His brother, Marc Chérèque, went on to serve as the President, since 2005, of FC Grenoble. Another brother was vice-president from 2009 to 2011 of Amadeus IT Group. Chérèque went to the Lycée Notre-Dame Saint-Sigisbert in Nancy earning his Baccalauréat, leaving in 1975. Career Chérèque worked for a hospital in Puteaux in Paris, then worked at a hospital in Digne-les-Bains, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of south-east France. Solidaires Unitaires Démocratiques
The Union syndicale Solidaires, Solidaires or Solidaires Unitaires Démocratiques (SUD) is a French group of trade unions. Political position They tend to favor progressive or even radical views and work with the alter-globalization or anti-globalization movement. The Group of 10 and the SUD Unions are part of the European Social Forum and the World Social Forum. Most of the SUD trade-union practice a syndicalism of struggle (''syndicalisme de lutte''), like factions of the CGT, FO and the CNT. Force Ouvrière
The General Confederation of Labor - Workers' Force (, or simply , FO), is one of the five major union confederations in France. In terms of following, it is the third behind the CGT and the CFDT. Force Ouvrière was founded in 1948 by former members of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) who denounced the dominance of the French Communist Party over that federation. FO is a member of the European Trade Union Confederation. Its leader is Frédéric Souillot, since June 2022. The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is the major trade union organisation representing workers at the European level. In its role as a European social partner, the ETUC works both in a consulting role with the European Commission and negotiates agreements and work programmes with European employers. It coordinates the national and sectoral policies of its affiliates on social and economic matters, particularly in the framework of the EU institutional processes, including European economic governance and the European Semester. Nicole Notat (born 26 July 1947 in Châtrices, Marne) is the former secretary general of the union CFDT. She is currently founder and president of Vigeo, a company committed to a concept of sustainable development. Notat is a member of the ''Group of Reflection on the Future of Europe'' chaired by Felipe Gonzalez and established by the European Council. The group's mission is to propose to the European Council of March 2010 a strategic roadmap for Europe in 2020–2030. General Confederation Of Labour (France)
The General Confederation of Labour (, , CGT) is a national trade union center, founded in 1895 in the city of Limoges. It is the first of the five major French confederations of trade unions. It is the largest in terms of votes in the Labour Court elections (34.0% in the 2008 election), and second largest in terms of membership numbers. Its membership decreased to 650,000 members in 1995–96 (it had more than doubled when François Mitterrand was elected president in 1981), before increasing today to between 700,000 and 720,000 members, slightly fewer than the Confédération Française Démocratique du Travail (CFDT). Michel Rocard (; 23 August 1930 – 2 July 2016) was a French politician and a member of the Socialist Party (France), Socialist Party (PS). He served as Prime Minister of France, Prime Minister under François Mitterrand from 1988 to 1991 during which he created the ''Revenu minimum d'insertion'' (RMI), a social minimum welfare program for indigents, and achieved the Matignon Agreements (1988), Matignon Accords regarding the status of New Caledonia. He was a member of the European Parliament, and was strongly involved in European policies until 2009. The French Confederation of Christian Workers (; CFTC) is one of the five major French confederation of trade unions, belonging to the social Christian tradition. It was founded in 1919 as the Trade Union of Employees of Industry and Commerce under the inspiration of Exupérien Mas with the goal of safeguarding the material as well as the spiritual interests of its members. In 1964, the union split, a majority founding the French Democratic Confederation of Labour (CFDT), a non-confessional trade-union. The ''contrat première embauche'' (CPE; ) was a new form of employment contract pushed in spring 2006 in France by Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin. This employment contract, available solely to employees under 26, would have made it easier for the employer to fire employees by removing the need to provide reasons for dismissal for an initial "trial period" of two years, in exchange for some financial guarantees for employees, the intention being to make employers less reluctant to hire additional staff. However, the enactment of this amendment to the so-called "Equality of Opportunity Act" () establishing this contract was so unpopular that soon massive protests were held, mostly by young students, and the government rescinded the amendment.
