Universidad Católica del Ecuador is an Ecuadorian association football, football club based in Quito. They play in the top tier of Ecuadorian football and have spent the majority of their history in the top-flight Serie A de Ecuador, Serie A. Universidad Católica was officially founded on 15 May 1963. Historic rivals include LDU Quito, Sociedad Deportiva Aucas, Aucas, Club Deportivo El Nacional, El Nacional and Sociedad Deportivo Quito, Deportivo Quito. History Universidad Católica was founded as a university football team for Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, a Catholic university in Quito. In 1962, they won the inter-university championship. Soon after, they became a football club on 15 May 1963 under ''Liga Deportiva de la Universidad Católica''. Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa () is a multi-purpose stadium in Quito, Ecuador. It is currently used primarily for football matches and has a capacity of 35,258. Overview Built in 1951, it sits at the intersection of the Avenida 6 de Diciembre and Avenida Naciones Unidas, two major streets in Ecuador's capital city. Football clubs Deportivo Quito, El Nacional and Universidad Católica use the facility for their home games, although other prominent teams in the city have used the stadium for home games in the past.
