Burneston
Burneston is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District, Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 Census it had a population of 244, increasing to 311 at the 2011 Census. The village is close to the A1 road (Great Britain), A1(M) road and is about south-east of Bedale. History The village is recorded in the ''Domesday Book'' as "Brennigston" and at the time was the property of Merleswein the Sheriff. The King passed ownership to Count Alan of Brittany, who made Robert of Moutiers the local landlord. In 1591 the lordship was granted to Sir Richard Theakston by the Queen. It subsequently passed through the Pierse family of Bedale in 1639, the Wastell family in 1682, to eventually reside in 1830 with Matthew Montagu, 4th Baron Rokeby. The old Roman road of Dere Street ran near the village and now follows the route of the A1(M). Church Of St Lambert, Burneston
The Church of St Lambert, Burneston, is the Anglican parish church for the village of Burneston in North Yorkshire, England. The church was built progressively in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, with some later additions and is now a grade I listed structure. It is the only Anglican church in England to be dedicated to Lambert of Maastricht, St Lambert, and one of its former vicars, Canon John Hartley (tennis), John Hartley, was noted for being a winner at the Men's Singles championship at The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon two years running. The church was grade I listed in 1966. History Whilst the current structure dates back to the 13th century, it is known that church existed at Burneston not long after the Domesday Book was collated, as Robert de Musters gave the church at Burneston to St Mary's Abbey, York, St Mary's Abbey in York during the tenure of William Rufus, who reigned between 1087 and 1100.
