Brian C. Downey
Brian Clifford Downey (November 5, 1950 – January 12, 2012) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. Born in Castor, Alberta to Clifford and Doreen Downey, Brian Downey was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the riding of Stettler as a Progressive Conservative member during the 1986 Alberta general election. He served his first term as a backbencher in the Don Getty government. He was re-elected for his second term in the 1989 Alberta general election. However, during that election, Premier Don Getty was defeated in his own riding of Edmonton-Whitemud. Downey resigned as the member for Stettler so that Getty could run in a by-election. Under long-standing practice in Westminster systems, if the party leader doesn't have a seat of his own the MLA for a safe seat resigns to give the leader a chance to get into the chamber via a by-election. Stettler was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1993. History The Stettler electoral district was formed in 1909 from the eastern portions of the Gleichen, Rosebud, Innisfail, Red Deer and Lacombe electoral districts. Graham Harle
Graham Lisle Harle (December 9, 1931 – February 9, 2022) was a British-born Canadian provincial level politician from Alberta. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from February 14, 1972, to 1986 sitting with the governing Progressive Conservative caucus. During his time in the legislature Harle served in a couple of different portfolios in the cabinet of Premier Peter Lougheed. Early life Harle was born on December 9, 1931, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England, to James Alfred Harle and wife Constance Balfour. Harle attended Denstone College before moving to Edmonton in 1947 at the age of 16 with his parents. He finished high school in Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta where he completed an agriculture degree and later law. Harle contracted polio in 1952 and was hospitalized for five months. Don Getty
Donald Ross Getty (August 30, 1933 – February 26, 2016) was a Canadian politician who served as the 11th premier of Alberta between 1985 and 1992. A member of the Progressive Conservatives, he served as Energy Minister and Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister in the government of Peter Lougheed before leaving politics for the private sector in 1979. He returned to politics six years later to contest the leadership contest resulting from Lougheed's retirement. He defeated two other candidates, and became Premier November 1, 1985. As Premier, Getty was faced with an economic slowdown and falling energy prices, which hit Alberta's petroleum-dominated economy hard. The Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta (often referred to colloquially as Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta) was a provincial centre-right party in the Canadian province of Alberta that existed from 1905 to 2020. Cliff Downey
Clifford William Downey (May 24, 1928 – May 3, 2018) was a farmer who served as a Canadian federal politician from 1968 to 1972. After leaving Parliament he became active in farmers rights movements. Downey was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1968 federal election. He defeated four other candidates in a landslide to win his only term in office. He retired from federal politics in 1972. Downey served on the Standing Committee on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs and the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections during his time in Parliament. After leaving Parliament he became a member of the Alberta Surface Rights Board, and a Farmers Advocate of Alberta member and had been lobbying for surface rights for 20 years before retiring in 2006. 1989 Alberta General Election
The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Edmonton-Whitemud is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, Canada. In 1989, its constituents unseated the Premier of the day, Donald Getty, by voting for Liberal candidate Percy Wickman. The district was represented by Dave Hancock who was in his fourth term as the Member of the Legislative Assembly. Hancock has also served as Minister of Justice twice, Attorney General and prior to that as Minister of Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs.
