Brackley Central Railway Station
Brackley Central was a railway station on the former Great Central Main Line which ran from Manchester Piccadilly to London Marylebone, the last main line to be built from the north of England to London. History The station opened when passenger services commenced on 15 March 1899 serving the Northamptonshire town of Brackley, and was the second station in the town, following the London and North Western Railway's facility, which was known simply as Brackley. The Great Central Railway's London Extension was a victim of the Beeching Axe as it was seen as a duplicate of the Midland Main Line and after a period of rundown with lesser stations closing first, the section between Aylesbury and Rugby Central, including Brackley Central station, was closed to all traffic on 5 September 1966. Brackley is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in West Northamptonshire, England, bordering Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, from Oxford and from Northampton. Historically a market town based on the wool and lace trade, it was built on the intersecting trade routes between London, Birmingham, the English Midlands, Midlands, Cambridge and Oxford. Brackley is close to Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone and home to the Mercedes-Benz in Formula One, Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1, F1 Team. History The place-name 'Brackley' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ''Brachelai''. It appears as ''Brackelea'' in 1173 and as ''Brackeley'' in 1230 in the Pipe Rolls. The name means 'Bracca's glade or clearing'. Brackley was held in 1086 by Earl Alberic, after which it passed to the Earl of Leicester, and to the families of Earl of Winchester#Earls of Winchester, 1st Creation (1207), De Quincy and Roland.
