Boston Militia
The Boston Militia were a women's full-contact football team in the Women's Football Alliance of which they were two-time champions (2011, 2014). Previously, the Militia played in the Independent Women's Football League from 2008 until 2010, winning the IWFL championship in 2010. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the Militia played its home games at Dilboy Stadium in nearby Somerville. On January 5, 2015, the team announced they were discontinuing operations due to a lack of teams to play against in the region. Following a transfer of ownership, the team has been reorganized as the Boston Renegades. Independent Women's Football League
The Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) was the first Women's American football league established by women players for women players. The league was founded in 2000, began play in 2001, and played its last season in 2018. Members of the original roster of the Austin Outlaws were the league's founders. Following the establishment of the league as a separate entity from the team, former outlaws players Laurie Frederick, Jaime Bailey and Sandra Plato became the original IWFL executive council. Cleveland Fusion
The Cleveland Fusion is a women's professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. They play in the Women's Football Alliance. The Fusion played in the National Women's Football Association from their inception in 2002 until 2008. Home games are played at Mustang Stadium at Maple Heights High School. History The Cleveland Fusion were founded in 2002. They joined the Women's Football Alliance in 2009 after seven seasons in the National Women's Football Association. The team used to play at Bedford High School's Bearcat Stadium, as well as at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio. A number of players have been drawn from Cleveland-area colleges, including Case Western Reserve University. T.J. Monachino took over the team before the 2017 season. Philadelphia Liberty Belles
The Philadelphia Liberty Belles are a team of the Women's Football Alliance which began play for its inaugural 2009 season. Home games are played on the campus of Wissahickon High School in Ambler, Pennsylvania. The Liberty Belles are named in honor of a team which played in the National Women's Football Association and Independent Women's Football League from 2001 to 2004 (and in fact, won the NWFA's inaugural 2001 championship). Despite the namesake, there is no connection between the two teams and only one person related to this team from the original (Carol Grubb). The New England Nightmare is a now-defunct women's tackle football team. They began play in 2010, as a member of the Women's Football Alliance. The Northeastern Nitro is a team that competes in the Women's Spring Football League that began play in the 2011 season. They have recently relocated to CT. New England Intensity
The New England Intensity was an American football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Medway, Massachusetts. Home games were played at Joseph P. Hanlon Field on the campus of Medway High School in Medway. For its first season, in 2003, the Intensity was known as the Rhode Island Riptide. Games were played at Pierce Field in East Providence, Rhode Island. The following two seasons the team was known as the Rhode Island Intensity. The team moved to Medway, going by the "New England" locale name, the Intensity played in the Women's Professional Football League before going back to the IWFL the following year. The team appears to have folded after the 2013 season. New York Nemesis
The New York Nemesis were a women's tackle football team playing out of the Capital District, New York, Capital District of New York (state), New York. It was a member of the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL), a league with over 30 teams across the United States. The Nemesis played in the Northern Conference, with home games on the campus of Schenectady High School in Schenectady, New York, Schenectady. The team was owned by ten year women's football veteran Carley Pesente, who is also a ranked professional boxer. She put together a strong management team led by GM Diane Wilkinson, and Alana Graziano Assistant GM and Team Delegate, both veterans to the game of football. Baltimore Nighthawks
The Baltimore Nighthawks are a women's American football team in the Women's Football Alliance. The Nighthawks played their inaugural game in Brooklandville at Martin D. Tullai Field (adjacent to St. Paul's School). The Nighthawks played the remainder of their home season at the Baltimore Lutheran School in Towson. The Baltimore Nighthawks support several charitable organizations including Healthcare for the Homeless, Special Olympics MD through the annual Polar Bear Plunge, various breast cancer groups, and the Central MD Girl Scouts. On March 21, 2009, the Nighthawks made women's football history when they hosted the first Pink Ribbon Bowl. The goal was to raise awareness about breast cancer and introduce professional women's tackle football to a broader audience. A portion of the proceeds benefited the Susan G. Philadelphia Firebirds (IWFL)
The Philadelphia Firebirds are a women's football team in the Independent Women's Football League based in Philadelphia. They are in the Eastern Conference, North Atlantic Division with the Boston Militia, New York Nemesis, and New York Sharks. The team was formerly known as the Philadelphia Phoenix and formerly played in the National Women's Football Association. Upon moving to the IWFL, they changed their name so as to avoid confusion with their fellow IWFL franchise, the Carolina Phoenix. Philadelphia's first women's tackle football team was founded in 2001 as the Philadelphia Liberty Belles. The Belles won the inaugural NWFL Championship that year. In 2002, the Belles lost in the semi-final playoff round. Heading into the 2003 season, the team split and the Philadelphia Phoenix was formed. Montreal Blitz
The Montreal Blitz is a women's gridiron football team, founded in 2001, which plays Canadian football in the Central Canadian Women's Football League. Previously, the team played American football in the Independent Women's Football League (2001–2016) and in the Women's Football Alliance (in 2017). They are based at Dalbé-Viau High School in the borough of Lachine, in Montreal, Quebec. The Blitz were the only Canadian team in a women's American football league.
