Borrowash
Borrowash is a village in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, England, situated immediately east of the Derby city boundary. The appropriate civil parish is called Ockbrook and Borrowash. History Borrowash was, for most of its history, the second village in Ockbrook parish and sits on the eastern edge of Derby city. In the late 1800s it started to grow and now it is the larger of the two villages. The Derby Canal arrived in Borrowash in 1796, but it gradually fell into decline after the introduction of the railway during mid nineteenth century; and by the 1960s it was abandoned. Passenger rail service ceased in 1966 and the Borrowash railway station was demolished in 1994. Borrowash is part of the parish of Ockbrook, but has its own church, St Stephen's Church, Borrowash, which was built in 1899 by P.H.Currey of Derby who designed many fine buildings in the county. Ockbrook
Ockbrook is a village in Derbyshire, England. It is almost contiguous with the village of Borrowash, the two only separated by the A52. The civil parish is Ockbrook and Borrowash. The population of this civil parish at the 2011 Census was 7,335. Ockbrook lies about east of Derby. History There is evidence of human activity in Ockbrook as far back as the Mesolithic period (~8000BC) in the form of two bifacial cores of flint. A small greenstone axe head attests to Neolithic activity (4000 - 2500BC, but no archaeological evidence has yet been discovered of Bronze Age activity in the village. From the Iron Age (800BC - AD43) there is a variety of evidence obtained during the excavation of a Romano-British aisled building at Littlehay Grange Farm between 1994 and 1997. St Stephen's Church, Borrowash
St Stephen's Church, Borrowash is a parish church in the Church of England in Borrowash, Derbyshire. History The foundation stone was laid on 13 November 1889 by Mrs R.L. Farmer, wife of the vicar of All Saints' Church, Ockbrook. The church was built to the designs of the Derby-based architect Percy Heylyn Currey and constructed of heather brick. It consists of chancel, nave, organ chamber and vestry, with provision for about 200 people. The contractor was F. Slater of Derby. The wrought iron screen was presented by Mr. Edward H Pares of Hopwell Hall. The church-yard was laid out by Messrs William Barron and Son, landscape gardeners of Borrowash. Ockbrook and Borrowash () is a civil parish in the borough of Erewash in the county of Derbyshire in England. It straddles the A52 a few miles east of Derby and contains two adjacent villages of very different character: Ockbrook, which lies just north of the A52 and Borrowash which lies to the south. The 2001 Census records Ockbrook and Borrowash having a population of 7,331 people, with 1,443 being aged 0–15, 4,504 being 16-64 and 1,384 being 65 or older. These people make up 3006 households. 2,456 of the homes are owner occupied (81.7%), higher than the Derbyshire average of 74.4%. The unemployment rate is 2.5%, less than the Derbyshire average of 3.2%. The civil parish population at the 2011 Census had increased marginally to 7,335. Derby Canal
The Derby Canal ran from the Trent and Mersey Canal at Swarkestone to Derby and Little Eaton, and to the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre, in Derbyshire, England. The canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1793 and was fully completed in 1796. It featured a level crossing of the River Derwent in the centre of Derby. An early tramroad, known as the Little Eaton Gangway, linked Little Eaton to coal mines at Denby. The canal's main cargo was coal, and it was relatively successful until the arrival of the railways in 1840. It gradually declined, with the gangway closing in 1908 and the Little Eaton Branch in 1935. Early attempts at restoration were thwarted by the closure of the whole canal in 1964. Since 1994, there has been an active campaign for restoration spearheaded by the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust and Society. Elvaston, Derbyshire
Elvaston is a small village and civil parish in Derbyshire, England. The parish also includes two hamlets, Ambaston and Thulston, and a modern housing estate, Boulton Moor. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was 1,801. Located to the south-east of Derby, Elvaston itself is dominated by Elvaston Castle, a country house which is currently in the ownership of Derbyshire County Council, who plan to lease the site to a private company. The move has proved controversial, attracting a petition of 60,000 signatures against the proposals collected by the Elvaston Castle Estate Trust, who want to keep the site in public ownership.
