New Brunswick (french: Nouveau-Brunswick, , locally ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is one of the three Maritime provinces and one of the four Atlantic provinces. A local service district (LSD) is a provincial administrative unit for the provision of local services in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. LSDs relate to areas of the province's former county municipalities that were not incorporated as municipalities around centres of population. They are defined in law by the ''Local Service Districts Regulation'' of the ''Municipalities Act''. In 2017, the ''Municipalities Act'' was replaced by the ''Local Governance Act'', which continued the ''Local Service Districts Regulation''. LSDs are operated by provincial staff. Residents have the opportunity to serve in an advisory capacity to provincial staff. As management units collectively referred to as unincorporated areas, application of the LSD concept has evolved to fit changes in communities over time, and they define their communities to varying degrees. Northumberland County is located in northeastern New Brunswick, Canada. Geography Northumberland County is covered by thick forests, whose products stimulate the economy. The highest peaks in the province, including Mount Carleton lie in the northwestern corner of the county. The county is dominated by the Miramichi River, world famous for its salmon fishing. The lower portion of the river is an estuary that widens into Miramichi Bay, a part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
