Best Mate
Best Mate (28 January 1995 – 1 November 2005) was an Irish-bred, English-trained racehorse and three-time winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was considered one of the most loved horses in the history of horse racing in the UK, with his sudden death while racing making front-page news. Background The horse was owned by Jim Lewis and trained by Henrietta Knight. He was sired by Un Desperado, a French stallion who won the Prix Eugène Adam in 1986. In 2000 a share of 40% was sold to Markus Jooste for the sum of £242,000 Racing career Best Mate won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2002, 2003, and 2004 with jockey Jim Culloty, matching the record of Arkle, but was withdrawn from the 2005 race eight days before the event due to bursting a blood vessel on the gallops. Top Ville
Top Ville (5 April 1976 – November 13, 1998) was an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In the autumn of 1978, the colt established himself as one of the leading two-year-old colts in France with wins in the Prix Saint-Roman, Prix de Condé. In the following year, he took his winning run to six with victories in the Prix de Guiche, Prix Lupin and Prix du Jockey Club, beating top-class opponents including Irish River and Le Marmot. He was beaten in his two remaining races and was retired to stud, where he became a successful and influential breeding stallion. Background Top Ville was a dark-coated bay horse with a white star and a white sock on his left hind leg bred in Ireland by his owner Aga Khan IV. Prix Eugène Adam
The Prix Eugène Adam is a Group 2 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Maisons-Laffitte over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1 miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. History The event was established in 1893, and it was originally called the Prix Monarque. It was named after Monarque, the sire of Gladiateur. The Prix Monarque was renamed the Prix du Président de la République in 1903. It reverted to its original name when a new Prix du Président de la République (the future Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud) was introduced in 1904. Baldric (horse)
Baldric (16 May 1961 – 26 August 1986) was an American-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, best known for winning the classic 2000 Guineas in 1964. When racing in Britain, the horse was known as Baldric II. Baldric won twice in 1963 but after being beaten on his three-year-old debut he started a 20/1 outsider for the 2000 Guineas. He won the race, the most valuable ever run in Britain, and went on to win the Prix Perth and the Champion Stakes in Autumn. After two unsuccessful runs in 1965, Baldric was retired to stud where he had success as a sire of winners in both France and Japan. The high-top is a shoe that extends slightly over the wearer's ankle. It is commonly an athletic shoe, particularly for basketball. The Cheltenham Festival is a horse racing-based meeting in the National Hunt racing calendar in the United Kingdom, with race prize money second only to the Grand National. Exeter Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located near the city of Exeter, Devon, England. Locally it is known as Haldon racecourse because of its location on top of the Haldon Hills. L’Escargot (1963–1984) was an Irish national hunt racehorse notable as being a Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National winner. L'Escargot, whose name is French for the Snail, was a large chestnut gelding with a small white star. He was bought for 3,500 guineas as a three-year-old at the Ballsbridge Sales by the United States ambassador to Ireland Raymond R. Guest and went into trainig with Dan Moore. L'Escargot made his first appearance at the Cheltenham Festival in 1968 when he was a five-year-old, winning the second division of the Gloucestershire Hurdle with his regular jockey Tommy Carberry.
