Berwick Bandits
The Berwick Bandits are a British speedway club, based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. They currently compete in the SGB Championship, racing at Shielfield Park, with home matches usually taking place on Saturday evenings. They also run a second team in the National Development League, known as the Berwick Bullets. History 1968–1981 Berwick have been operational in consecutive seasons from 1968 (as founder members of British League Division Two) through to the present day. From 1968 to 1980 they competed in division 2, either in the British League Division 2, or under the new name of the National League (NL). The team won their first honour during the 1980 National League season after winning the Division 2 Knockout Cup. In 1980, Berwick left Shielfield Park after a disagreement with the landlords Berwick Rangers FC. Berwick-upon-Tweed
Berwick-upon-Tweed (), sometimes known as Berwick-on-Tweed or simply Berwick, is a town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, south of the Anglo-Scottish border, and the northernmost town in England. The 2011 United Kingdom census recorded Berwick's population as 12,043. The town is at the mouth of the River Tweed on the east coast, south east of Edinburgh, north of Newcastle upon Tyne, and north of London. Uniquely for England, the town is slightly further north than Denmark's capital Copenhagen and the southern tip of Sweden further east of the North Sea, which Berwick borders. Berwick was founded as an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the Kingdom of Northumbria, which was annexed by England in the 10th century. Lee Complin
Peter Lee Complin (born 17 November 1984) is a speedway rider from England. Speedway career Complin began his British career riding for Sheffield Tigers during the 2001 Premier League speedway season. The following year he also rode for Belle Vue Aces in the top tier of British Speedway. In 2007, he joined Stoke Potters where he stayed for three seasons peaking with a 7.95 average and he also made appearances for both Peterborough Panthers and Wolverhampton Wolves during the 2009 Elite League speedway season. He moved to the Berwick Bandits for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons before leaving speedway for nearly ten years. He was part of the Berwick team that won the Premier League Four-Team Championship, held on 15 July 2012, at the East of England Arena. In 2021, he made a surprise comeback and signed for Newcastle Diamonds for the SGB Championship 2022 but Newcastle folded in June resulting in Complin signing for Plymouth Gladiators in August and he finished the 2022 season ... Workington Comets
The Workington Comets are a British speedway club, based in Workington, Cumbria, racing out of the Northside Training Track. The team previously operated from 1970 to 2018 and were based at Derwent Park Stadium which they shared with Workington Town Rugby League Football Club. They were closed at the end of the 2018 SGB Championship season, but re-opened in 2022 and competed in the 2023 National Development League speedway season. History 1970–1987 The team's inaugural league season was the 1970 British League Division Two season in which they finished in 11th place. The team spent 12 years in Division 2, finishing 2nd in 1973 and 3rd in 1976. The 1987 season saw Glasgow Tigers based at Derwent Park. However the team changed its name to Workington Tigers soon afterwards but held their last fixture against Stoke on 31 July. The team's results were expunged. Tweedmouth
Tweedmouth is part of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, England. It is located on the south bank of the River Tweed and is connected to Berwick town centre, on the north bank, by two road bridges and a railway bridge. Tweedmouth has historically always been part of England, in contrast to the walled town of Berwick which came under Scottish control for several periods in the Middle Ages. The local nickname for people from Tweedmouth is ''"Twempies"''. In 1951 the parish had a population of 6410. 1991 British League Season
The 1991 British League season was the 57th season of the top tier of Motorcycle speedway, speedway in the United Kingdom and the 27th known as the British League. Summary Wolverhampton Wolves won the league for the first time in their history. The club which was first founded in 1928 had only ever won the Provincial Midland League in 1962 and the Provincial League (speedway), Provincial League in 1963. They were led by their American star Sam Ermolenko, who became the first rider to push Hans Nielsen (speedway rider), Hans Nielsen from the top of the averages after eight consecutive years at the top. The Wolves team relied on two more American riders, Ronnie Correy and Sam's younger brother Charles Ermolenko, in addition to Englishman Graham Jones (speedway rider), Graham Jones to seal the title from Bradford. 1995 Academy League
The 1995 Academy League was the second tier/division of British speedway. It was effectively the same division of teams that had competed in the 1994 British League Division 3 but was renamed because the British League Division 1 and 2 had merged. Summary The title was won by Berwick Bandits who had also won the previous season's Division 3 title. Final league table Cleveland Bays withdrew. Academy League Knockout Cup The 1995 Academy League Knockout Cup was the 28th edition of the Knockout Cup for tier two teams. It was only the tier two competition because the Division 1 & 2 had merged, this meant that the newly formed Academy League was tier two of British speedway at the time. Ancroft
Ancroft is a village and civil parish (which includes the village of Scremerston) in Northumberland, England. Prior to 1844, Ancroft lay within the Islandshire exclave of County Durham. It is south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, and has a population of 885, rising slightly to 895 at the 2011 census. There are several suggestions as to how Ancroft got its name. It might be an abridged version of "Aidan's-croft" - the croft of St Aidan who was the first Bishop of Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Alternatively, it might be that as the church is dedicated to Saint Anne, the village took its name from the church - "St Anne's croft". A third suggestion is simply that it means one croft or solitary croft - "ane croft".
