Bernhard Baron
Bernhard Baron (5 December 1850 – 1 August 1929) was a tobacco manufacturer and philanthropist. He was born in Brest-Litovsk (in modern Belarus), to Jewish parents, lived in Rostov as a child, and immigrated to the United States at an early age with his father. Following work at a tobacco factory in the United States, and time spent making cigarettes by hand, he invented a cigarette-making machine. From 1890 to 1895 he was managing director of the National Cigarette Tobacco Company of New York, which he had set up with the backing of a group of financiers to challenge the powerful tobacco trusts. In 1895 he visited England to sell the patent rights to his cigarette machine. However, he was attracted by the commercial opportunities and moved to England, where he established the Baron Cigarette Machine Company Limited in Aldgate, London. Rose Henriques
Rose Louise Henriques, Lady Henriques CBE (née Loewe; 17 August 1889 – 1972), was a British artist and social and charity worker in the East End of London, where she was born and lived throughout her life. She was posthumously recognised as a British Hero of the Holocaust. Biography Henriques was born in Stoke Newington to Orthodox Jewish parents. Her father, James Henry Loewe, was a bankers' agent, community worker and scholar from Brighton while her mother, Emma née Immerwahr, had emigrated to London from Beuthen (Bytom) in Upper Silesia. At the age of 16, Rose was sent to stay with relations in Breslau, now Wrocław, where she trained as a pianist and learned to speak German. The history of the Jews in England goes back to the reign of William the Conqueror. Although it is likely that there had been some Jewish presence in the Roman period, there is no definitive evidence, and no reason to suppose that there was any community during Anglo-Saxon times. The first written record of Jewish settlement in England dates from 1070. The Jewish settlement continued until King Edward I's Edict of Expulsion in 1290.
