Bernard Wood (cricketer)
Bernard Bedingfield Wood (25 February 1886 – 8 July 1974) was a New Zealand cricketer, golfer and businessman. Life and family Bernard Wood was born into a prominent Christchurch business family. His grandfather, William Derisley Wood (1824–1904), founded Wood Bros flour mills in Christchurch. Bernard’s father, William Wood (1858–1921), one of six brothers, founded William Wood and Company in the 1890s, which Bernard took over after his father’s death. William Wood and Company was a trading and manufacturing company dealing mostly in agricultural produce and machinery. Bernard Wood attended Christ's College, Christchurch. In December 1913 he married Eileen Ward (1886–1952), daughter of Sir Joseph Ward, who had been New Zealand's Prime Minister from 1906 to 1912. The wedding took place at the Basilica, Wellington. Joseph Ward
Sir Joseph George Ward, 1st Baronet, (26 April 1856 – 8 July 1930) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 17th prime minister of New Zealand from 1906 to 1912 and from 1928 to 1930. He was a dominant figure in the Liberal and United ministries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ward was born into an Irish Catholic family in Melbourne, Victoria. In 1863, financial hardship forced his family to move to New Zealand, where he completed his education. Ward established a successful grain trade in Invercargill in 1877 and soon became prominent in local politics. He became a Member of Parliament in 1887. Following the election of the Liberal Government in 1891, Ward was appointed as Postmaster-General under John Ballance; he was promoted to Minister of Finance in the succeeding ministry of Richard Seddon. Dan Reese (cricketer)
Daniel Reese (26 January 1879 – 12 June 1953) was a New Zealand cricketer. Biography Reese was a son of Christchurch businessman, Member of Parliament and former rower Dan Reese. He was born in Christchurch in 1879 and received his education at West Christchurch School. A left-handed batsman and a slow-medium bowler, Reese first represented his national team aged 19. His early cricket was with the Midland club in Christchurch and his provincial team, Canterbury. He left New Zealand to play for Melbourne Cricket Club from 1900 to 1903 before continuing to England. In England he played for London County and Essex. Plum Warner rated him as among the greatest fielders of all time. He returned to New Zealand, and captained Canterbury from 1907 to 1921, and New Zealand from 1907 to 1914, including the tour to Australia in 1913–14. Cricketers From Christchurch
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket.
