Benzin (opera)
''Benzin'' (German for "petrol") is a comic opera in 2 acts by Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek, with a libretto based on Homer's ''Odyssey'' and material from Calderón de la Barca's play ''El mayor encanto, amor'' (1635), composed in 1929 but not performed until 2010 at the Theater Chemnitz, Germany. The plot concerns a Zeppelin captain, Ulysses Eisenhardt, who lands on an island seeking its fuel reserves, but whose crew are ensnared by the enchanting Gladys Thunderbolt. The 2010 premiere featuring Kouta Räsänen, Johanna Stojkovic, Guibee Yang, Susanne Thielemann, Matthias Winter, Opera Chemnitz Chorus, Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, conducted by Frank Beermann and directed by Martin Duncan, was recorded and released on CD in 2017 by CPO. Emil Nikolaus Von Reznicek
Emil Nikolaus Joseph, Freiherr von Reznicek (4 May 1860, in Vienna – 2 August 1945, in Berlin) was an Austrian composer of Romanian-Czech ancestry. Life Reznicek's grandfather, Josef Resnitschek (1787–1848), was a trumpet virtuoso and band leader in the Imperial regiments Nos. 32 (''Esterhazy''), based in Budapest, and 60 (''Gustav Wasa''), based in Vienna where he played music with Johann Strauss Sr. and Joseph Lanner. Reznicek's father Josef Resnitschek/Reznicek (1812–1887) entered the army as a cadet and eventually became Feldmarschall-Lieutenant, the second-highest rank in the Austrian army, gaining an ordinary diploma of nobility in 1851 and the rank as a Baron (Freiherr) in 1859. A libretto (Italian for "booklet") is the text used in, or intended for, an extended musical work such as an opera, operetta, masque, oratorio, cantata or Musical theatre, musical. The ''Odyssey'' (; grc, Ὀδύσσεια, Odýsseia, ) is one of two major Ancient Greek literature, ancient Greek Epic poetry, epic poems attributed to Homer. Pedro Calderón de la Barca y Barreda González de Henao Ruiz de Blasco y Riaño (, ; ; 17 January 160025 May 1681) was a Spanish dramatist, poet, writer and knight of the Order of Santiago. He is known as one of the most distinguished Baroque writers of the Spanish Golden Age, especially for his plays. Calderón de la Barca was born in Madrid, where he spent most of his life. He was born on a boat in the Manzanares river, thus the name "de la Barca" added to his father's last name. During his life, he served as soldier and he was a Roman Catholic priest. Theater Chemnitz
Theater Chemnitz is the municipal theatre organization in Chemnitz, Germany.
