Ben Roberts (politician)
Benjamin Roberts (1880 – 17 November 1952) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party and a Cabinet Minister. Biography Roberts was born in 1880 in Liverpool. He started work as a farm labourer at 13. He brought his family to New Zealand in 1907 and settled in Carterton. He was elected to Parliament in the Wairarapa electorate in 1935, and remained a member of parliament to 1946, when he retired. He was both Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Marketing, from 1943 to 1946 in the First Labour Government under Peter Fraser Peter Fraser (; 28 August 1884 – 12 December 1950) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 24th prime minister of New Zealand from 27 March 1940 until 13 December 1949. In the Quran, Benjamin is referred to as a righteous young child, who remained with Jacob when the older brothers plotted against Joseph. Alexander Donald McLeod
Alexander Donald McLeod (13 July 1872 – 20 October 1938) was a Reform Party Member of Parliament in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand. He was Minister of Lands (1924–1928) and Industries and Commerce (1926–1928) in the Reform Government. Early life McLeod was born in the Wairarapa in 1872. He was the third son of William McLeod, one of the pioneers of the district. He became an apprentice on his father's farm and afterwards ran his own sheep farm. He was elected onto the Featherston Road Board and, when it was formed in 1902, the Featherston County Council. He remained on the county council until 1919. Member of Parliament McLeod won the Wairarapa electorate in the 1919 general election in a triangular contest, defeating the incumbent, J. T. Marryat Hornsby. He held the electorate until 1928, when he was defeated by Thomas William McDonald of the United Party. McLeod won the seat back in 1931, and retired in 1935. Bert Cooksley
Bertie Victor Cooksley (13 July 1892 – 26 July 1980), always known as Bert Cooksley, was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. Biography Cooksley was born in 1892 in Dunsandel, Canterbury. He attended Dunsdale School. He farmed in Taita in the Hutt Valley. He went with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force into World War I and landed at Gallipoli. He gave his birth as August 1892 (WWI) and August 1894 (WWII), rather than 13 July 1892. He was a market gardener (growing vegetables commercially), and in 1944 was President of the New Zealand Council of Commercial Gardeners. In 1943, he stood unsuccessfully in the 1943 general election for the seat of Otaki, on behalf of the National Party. He represented the Wairarapa electorate from 1949 and held it to 1963, when he retired. Cooksley was awarded the Military Medal in World War I. Ted Cullen
Edward Luttrell Cullen (5 September 1895 – 18 February 1963) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party, and a cabinet minister in the First Labour Government. Biography Early life Cullen was born in Havelock North, and educated at Nuhaka Native School and Napier Boys' High School. He joined the NZEF as a Rifleman then Sergeant (No 12356) in World War I, and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. He farmed at Wairoa and became Director of the Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Company. In this position he actively assisted returned servicemen and local Māori in becoming farmers. Political career He represented the Hawkes Bay electorate from 1935 to 1946, having stood there unsuccessfully in 1931.
