Martin Behrman
Martin Behrman (October 14, 1864 – January 12, 1926), an American Democratic politician, was the longest-serving mayor in New Orleans history. Life and career Behrman was born in New York City, the son of Frederica and Henry Behrman. His parents were emigrants from Germany. He was ethnically Jewish, but "knew little about his faith." His parents brought him to New Orleans as an infant. He lived most of his life in the Algiers neighborhood, on the west bank of the Mississippi River. As a young man he became affiliated with the Regular Democratic Organization, a powerful political faction in New Orleans, during the 1888 campaign of Francis T. Nicholls for governor of Louisiana. Behrman served as a delegate to the Louisiana state constitutional convention in 1898. Behrman eventually served as mayor for just under 17 years, first from 1904 to 1920. David Wesley Behrman (November 9, 1941 – December 9, 2014) was an American football offensive lineman who played in the American Football League for the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. He was the fourth overall pick in the 1963 AFL Draft by the Bills and the 11th pick in the 1963 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He also played in the Midwest Football League for the Lansing All Stars / Capitals and Flint Sabres from 1972 to 1976. College career Behrman played college football at Michigan State University. Professional career Buffalo Bills Behrman was the Bills' first-round draft pick in 1963 and played for them that year, but not in 1964. SS ''Martin Behrman'' was an American Liberty ship built in 1944 for service in World War II. Her namesake was Martin Behrman, long-time mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana. For the was she was operated by the Isbrandtsen Line under charter with the Maritime Commission and War Shipping Administration. Among the Liberty ships, the ''Martin Behrman'' was an EC2-S-C1 Type with Maritime Commission hull number 2827. Like other Liberty ships, she was long and wide, carried 9000 tons of cargo and had a top speed of . Most Liberty ships were named after prominent deceased Americans. This particular ship was built by Delta Shipbuilding Company in New Orleans. Her keel was laid on 25 October 1944 and she was launched on 4 December 1944. The Delta shipyard was started specifically for the war effort, at a site on the Industrial Canal near the Almonaster Avenue Bridge, immediately south of the present-day I-10 high-rise bridge.
