The Bayfield 40 is a Canadian sailboat that was designed by Ted Gozzard for Cruising (maritime), cruising and first built in 1982.Sherwood, Richard M.: ''A Field Guide to Sailboats of North America, Second Edition'', pages 378. Production The design was built by Bayfield Boat Yard in Clinton, Ontario, Canada, starting in 1984, but the company went out of business in 1988 after a factory fire and production ended then. Design The Bayfield 40 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of balsa-cored fibreglass, with wood trim. It has a staysail ketch rig, with aluminum spars, a clipper bow with a bowsprit and trailboards, a raised counter Transom (nautical), transom, a keel-mounted rudder controlled by a Ship's wheel, wheel and a fixed long keel. Ted Gozzard
Hedley (Ted) Gozzard (13 June 1933 – 15 May 2014) was a British yacht designer and builder. Gozzard was raised in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, where he apprenticed as a carpenter-joiner and gradually earned his journeyman’s papers in boat building, masonry and carpentry. Gozzard served in the Royal Air Force for a number of years as an airframe mechanic. On leaving the RAF in 1959 Gozzard came to Ontario and worked in the construction business in London, Ontario, where he designed and supervised the construction of homes and subdivisions. In his spare time he built and sailed a much modified Thunderbird.
