Battle Of Stanaford
The Battle of Stanaford (February 25, 1903) was an armed raid against striking miners in the village of Stanaford, West Virginia, United States. It was the final episode of the 1902 New River coal strike. Prelude Deputy United States Marshals Service, United States Marshall Daniel Webster Cunningham was tasked with serving injunctions on behalf of coal operators to a group of 33 miners who had marched from Quinnimont, West Virginia, Quinnimont, Fayette County, West Virginia, Fayette County, to Atkinsville, in present-day East Beckley, West Virginia, East Beckley, during the course of a strike. Stanaford is a census-designated place (CDP) and coal town in Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,350 at the 2010 census. The community was named after nearby Stanaford Branch. Geography Stanaford is located at (37.821262, -81.151458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.9 square miles (5.0 km); 1.9 square miles (4.9 km) of this is land, and 0.02 square miles (0.04 km) is water. Climate The climate in this area has mild differences between highs and lows, and there is adequate rainfall year-round.
