The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Recoleta, Buenos Aires was built as part of the Franciscan monastery, completed in 1732 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar Our Lady of the Pillar ( es, Nuestra Señora del Pilar) is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the context of the traditional belief that Mary, while living in Jerusalem, supernaturally appeared to the Apostle James the Greater in AD .... It is the second-oldest church in Buenos Aires, and has served as a parish church following the expulsion of the Franciscans in 1821. Recoleta is a '' barrio'' or neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, located in the northern part of the city, by the Río de la Plata. The area is perhaps best known to be the home of the distinguished Recoleta Cemetery.
