Barracks Row is a commercial strip along 8th Street SE that connects the Navy Yard and Capitol Hill neighborhoods in the Southeast Quadrant of Washington, D.C. south of Eastern Market between M St. SE and Pennsylvania Ave. SE. The area takes its name from the Marine Barracks, also known as 8th & I, which it faces along 8th Street SE. History Barracks Row is the oldest commercial district in the District of Columbia due to its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard, established in 1799, and the Marine Barracks, established in 1801. Interstate 695 (I-695) is a auxiliary Interstate Highway in Washington, D.C. It is also known as the Southeast Freeway. It travels from an interchange with I-395 south of the United States Capitol building east then south across the 11th Street Bridges to an intersection with I-295 and District of Columbia Route 295 (DC 295) in Anacostia. Access also exists from eastbound I-695 to Pennsylvania Avenue at Barney Circle, just northwest of the John Philip Sousa Bridge. Stub ramps at Pennsylvania Avenue, once meant to continue the freeway (as part of I-295) to I-95 and U.S. Route 50 northeast of Union Station, now provide access to Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. is located at the corner of 8th and I Streets, Southeast in Washington, D.C.
