Balakong ( Jawi: بالقوڠ; ) or Cheras South ( Jawi: چراس سلتن; ) is a township in Hulu Langat District, Selangor, Malaysia. Located to the southeast of Greater Kuala Lumpur, the township consists mainly of residential condominiums, office complexes and factories. Notable landmarks in Balakong include AEON Mall Cheras Selatan and Sin Ann Meow Temple (星安庙). History Name According to local Chinese residents, the name Balakong comes from the Chinese New Village, Balakong Chinese New Village. The village was drawn up and barred-wired by the British Empire under the Briggs Plan during the Malayan Emergency. Another belief is that there was a river running through the village named Sungai Balak and that the village adopted the river's name. It is believed that "-Kong" in Balakong comes from the Hakka word for river (江), and Balakong refers to the Hakka pronunciation of the river, Sungai Balak. Wong Siew Ki
Wong Siew Ki (王诗棋; pinyin: Wáng shī qí; born 17 May 1986), is a Malaysian politician who has served as Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Balakong since September 2018. She is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the state ruling but federal opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH) and formerly Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalitions. 2018 Balakong By-election
A by-election was held on 8 September 2018 for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly seat of Balakong. The seat became vacant after the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Eddie Ng Tien Chee on 20 July 2018 in a traffic accident on the Cheras–Kajang Expressway. Eddie Ng was a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the state ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. This was the second casual vacancy in the Assembly since the May 2018 general election after Sungai Kandis, which held a by-election in August 2018. The by-election will be held on the same day as the Seri Setia by-election. In the last 2018 general election, Ng defeated Barisan Nasional (BN)'s Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) candidate, Lim Chin Wah and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), with a vote majority of 35,538. Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway, SILK, also known as Kajang SILK Highway (Malay Language, Malay: ''Sistem Lingkaran-Lebuhraya Kajang''), is an expressway built to disperse and regulate the traffic flow in Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia. The expressway is to allow motorists to bypass the town centre of Kajang. It is also useful as the main ring road of Kajang. The Kilometre Zero is located at Mines Interchange near Seri Kembangan. History Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway used to be called Jalan Kajang–Puchong (Jalan Sungai Chua on Kajang town side) 11 and Jalan Balakong 3211. Democratic Action Party
The Democratic Action Party (abbreviation: DAP; ms, Parti Tindakan Demokratik; ; ta, ஜனநாயக செயல் கட்சி) is a Centre-left politics, centre-left social democracy, social democratic political party in Malaysia.
