BMCI (french: link=no, Banque marocaine pour le commerce et l'industrie, "Morocco Bank of Commerce and Industry") is a bank based in Morocco. It is a majority-owned subsidiary of the French financial group BNP Paribas. History At the end of the 19th century, the ''Comptoir national d'escompte de Paris'' (CNEP) – one of the founders of the french: link=no, italic=yes, Banque nationale de Paris, now BNP Paribas – had interests in Morocco, while from 1902 the ''Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas'' (Paris and Netherlands Bank) helped financed the Sherifian Empire in Morocco. Loans to Morocco, including those of 1902 and 1904 by the Paris and Netherlands Bank, helped finance the First Moroccan Crisis which led to the formation of Morocco as we know it today. The abbreviation S.A. or SA designates a type of limited company in certain countries, most of which have a Romance language as their official language and employ civil law. Originally, shareholders could be literally anonymous and collect dividends by surrendering coupons attached to their share certificates. Dividends were therefore paid to whoever held the certificate. Share certificates could be transferred privately, and therefore the management of the company would not necessarily know who owned its shares. As with bearer bonds, anonymous unregistered share ownership and dividend collection enabled money laundering, tax evasion, and concealed business transactions in general, so governments passed laws to audit the practice. Nowadays, shareholders of S.A.s are not anonymous, though shares can still be held by a holding company in order to obscure the beneficiary.
