Multi-sport Event
A multi-sport event is an organized sporting event, often held over multiple days, featuring competition in many different sports among organized teams of athletes from (mostly) nation-states. The first major, modern, multi-sport event of international significance was the Olympic Games, first held in modern times in 1896 in Athens, Greece and inspired by the Ancient Olympic Games, one of a number of such events held in antiquity. Most modern multi-sports events have the same basic structure. Games are held over the course of several days in and around a "host city", which changes for each competition. BC Games Society
The BC Games Society is a provincial crown corporation in British Columbia created in 1977. The organization is the governing body responsible for the BC Summer Games and BC Winter Games, and manages the Team BC program at the Canada Games. BC Winter Games
The BC Winter Games are an amateur sporting event held in British Columbia, Canada on every other (even-numbered) year. The next BC Winter Games are scheduled to be held in Greater Vernon, BC from March 23 to 26, 2023. History The BC Games date back to 1978 when the first Winter Games were hosted at Penticton, British Columbia. The Games would continue and be hosted every year until 1997, when it was changed to every second year along with the BC Summer Games. Broadcast In January 2016 it was announced that viaSport would be producing a daily three-minute video for the duration of the games for the 2016 year. Sponsored sports The BC Winter Games brings both able-bodied and disabled sports to one grand event all in the name of sport and competition. Western Canada Summer Games
The Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) were established in 1975 as a multi-sport event to provide development opportunities for amateur athletes and to help them advance their skills in a competitive, but friendly environment. Athletes range in age between 13 years of age and 23 years of age. The games also serve to broaden the exposure of talented athletes and provide a training ground for national and international level competitions. Social and cultural elements round out the sporting events for athletes. Alberta Winter Games
The Alberta Winter Games (AWG) is a Canadian provincial multi-sport event hosted in the province of Alberta. It is the winter portion of the multi-sport Alberta Games, which also involves the Alberta Summer Games and is strictly for amateur athletes. The inaugural year for the Alberta Winter Games was in 1976 and was hosted in Banff, Alberta. This event is held independently from the national Canadian event, the Canada Winter Games. Saskatchewan Games
The Saskatchewan Summer Games and Saskatchewan Winter Games are multi-sport events held in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The governing body for the Saskatchewan Games is the Saskatchewan Games Council, a non-profit organization who has held responsibility for organizing the Games since 2006. The Saskatchewan Games have been cancelled since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. History The games began in 1972 when Roy Romanow, then Minister in charge of the Saskatchewan Youth Agency, announced the beginning of the games. The first summer games were held in 1972 in Moose Jaw, and the first winter games were held two years later in North Battleford.
