Bükk
The Bükk Mountains () are a section of the North Hungarian Mountains of the Inner Western Carpathians. Much of the area is included in the Bükk National Park. Geography Although Kékes, the highest point in Hungary, is not here but in the nearby Mátra Mountains, the average height of the Bükk Mountains–with more than 20 peaks higher than 900 m–exceeds that of Mátra. The highest point of Bükk is Kettős bérc (961 m), the third highest main peak in Hungary after Kékes and Galyatető. Bükkszentkereszt
Bükkszentkereszt () is a village and mountain resort in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Hungary. The village is situated in the Bükk Mountains, at a height of 520 to 620 m above sea level. The municipality is partially inside Bükk National Park. About 20% of the inhabitants are of Slovaks, Slovak ethnicity. History Bükkszentkereszt was founded in 1755, to provide shelter for the Slovak workers of the glass manufacture (''huta'') built here this time. As another ''huta'' had already existed in a neighbouring village (present-day Bükkszentlászló), the new village was named ''Újhuta'' (new ''huta''). Glass production ceased in 1796. In the 19th century, inhabitants of Újhuta worked in the state-owned forests of Bükk Mountains. In 1910, Újhuta had 1011 inhabitants. Tourism began in the 1930s. Bükk National Park
Bükk National Park () is a national park in the Bükk Mountains of Northern Hungary, near Miskolc. It was founded in 1977 as the third national park in the country. It contains 431.3 km2 (of which 37.74 km2 is under increased protection). Mountainous and forested, Bükk is Hungary's largest national park and is situated in the northern mountains, between Szilvásvárad and Lillafüred. Bükk's important geological features include various karst formations within its limestone mountains - particularly caves (once inhabited by pre-historic people), swallow-holes, and ravines. Szeletian
The Szeleta Culture is a transitional archaeological culture between the Middle Paleolithic and the Upper Palaeolithic, found in Austria, Moravia, northern Hungary, and southern Poland. It is dated to 44,000 to 40,000 years ago, a period when both Neanderthals and modern humans were present in Europe. Most experts think that it is a Neanderthal culture, but the issue is debated. It is named after Szeleta Cave in the Bükk Mountains in Hungary. It was preceded by the Bohunician (48,000–40,000 BP), and is roughly contemporary with the Aurignacian (43,000–26,000 BP) in France, and the Uluzzian (45,000–37,000 BP) in Italy. Mátra
The Mátra () is a mountain range in northern Hungary, between the towns Gyöngyös and Eger. The country's highest peak, Kékestető (1014 m), belongs to this mountain range. Formation Pre-volcanic formations The formation of the Mátra is closely related to the formation of the North Hungarian Mountains and the Carpathians. Formations formed before the volcanism in the Miocene, are located primarily on the steep northern side of the Mátra. The reason for this is, that after the volcanism, the entire mountain range tilted southward due to the subsidence of the trench extending south of the Mátra and Bükk. The southern, more gentle part was buried by young sediments, while on the northern side steep slopes were formed by landslides during the Pleistocene. Anna Cave
The Anna Cave (also called ''Petőfi Cave'') is a natural limestone cave in Miskolc- Lillafüred, Hungary, near the waterfall. The cave was discovered in 1833, when opening a shaft in the limestone in order to provide the iron furnace at Hámor with water. It soon became a tourist attraction, even Sándor Petőfi visited it in 1847. However, in the second part of the century, when the iron furnaces were closed, the cave was forgotten. It was opened again in 1912. In 1927, when the Palace Hotel was built, new caverns were found. The entrance that's used today was constructed then. The cave has not only limestone structures, but also plant fossils. The cave can be visited all year round.
