Büdel Islands
The Büdel Islands () are a group of islands lying between Laktionov Island and Schule Island, off the east side of Renaud Island in the Biscoe Islands. First accurately shown on an Argentine government chart of 1957, they were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1959 for Julius Büdel, German sea ice specialist. Laktionov Island
Laktionov Island is an island long, lying northeast of Jurva Point, Renaud Island, in the Biscoe Islands of Antarctica. It was first accurately shown on an Argentine government chart of 1957. The island was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1959 after Aleksandr F. Laktionov (died 1965), a Soviet sea ice specialist in the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Leningrad, 1927–65, who became head of the Department of Oceanography, Ice Forecasting and River Mouths. Schule Island
Schule Island () is a small island lying 4 nautical miles (7 km) east of Laktionov Island, off the east side of Renaud Island in the Biscoe Islands. First accurately shown on an Argentine government chart of 1957. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1959 for John J. Schule, Jr., American oceanographer who organized the sea ice service of the U.S. Hydrographic Office in 1950. Renaud Island
Renaud Island is an ice-covered island in the Biscoe Islands of Antarctica, long and from (average ) wide, lying between the Pitt Islands and Rabot Island. It is separated from the Pitt Islands to the northeast by Mraka Sound, and from Lavoisier Island to the southwest by Pendleton Strait. History The Biscoe Islands were discovered in 1832 by a British expedition under John Biscoe and were first roughly surveyed by the French Antarctic Expedition under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, 1903–05 and 1908–10. It was on this second expedition that Renaud Island was first charted and named. Renaud Island was again roughly surveyed in 1935–36 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE). A number of the island's geographical features have been individually charted and named. Biscoe Islands
Mendez-Biscoe Islands is a series of islands, of which the principal ones are Renaud Island, Renaud, Lavoisier Island, Lavoisier (named ''Serrano'' by Chile and ''Mitre'' by Argentina), Watkins Island, Watkins, Krogh Island, Krogh, Pickwick Island, Pickwick and Rabot Island, Rabot, lying parallel to the west coast of Graham Land and extending between Southwind Passage on the northeast and Matha Strait on the southwest. Another group of islands are the Adolph Islands. The islands are named for Daren Mendez-Biscoe, the commander of a Spanish-British expedition which explored the islands in March 1832. UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (or UK-APC) is a United Kingdom government committee, part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, responsible for recommending names of geographical locations within the British Antarctic Territory (BAT) and the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). Such names are formally approved by the Commissioners of the BAT and SGSSI respectively and published in the BAT Gazetteer and the SGSSI Gazetteer maintained by the Committee. The BAT names are also published in the international Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica maintained by SCAR. The Committee may also consider proposals for new place names for geographical features in areas of Antarctica outside BAT and SGSSI, which are referred to other Antarctic place-naming authorities or decided by the Committee itself if situated in the unclaimed sector of Antarctica. Julius Büdel
Julius Büdel (8 August 1903 – 28 August 1983) was a German geomorphologist noted for his work on the influence of climate in shaping landscapes and landforms. In his work Büdel stressed the importance of inherited landforms in present-day landscapes and argued that many landforms are the result of a combination of processes, and not of a single process. Büdel estimated that 95% of mid-latitude landforms are relict. Büdel studied both cold-climate processes in Svalbard and "tropical" weathering processes in India to understand the origin of the relief of Central Europe, which he argued was a palimpsest of landforms formed at different times and under different climates.
