Burlington is an unincorporated area, unincorporated historic community Linn County, Oregon, Linn County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It was located about a mile downriver from Peoria, Oregon, Peoria. History The town began with a ferry across the Willamette River run by John Smith, and a store owned by John Donald. James Freeman platted the townsite in 1853, at which time it had two houses, two stores, a blacksmith shop, and the ferry. The river silted up and made the boat landings inaccessible so the town's population soon dwindled. Some of the buildings were moved to Peoria. Burlington post office was established in 1855 and ran until 1857 when it was renamed Peoria and likely moved to the other town. Burlington was located on the Donation Land Claim Act, Donation Land Claim of James Martin who came to Oregon from Little York, Illinois. A family tradition among Martin's descendants holds that Burlington was named after Burlington, Iowa, the nearest market town to Little York. ... Peoria is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It is on the right bank of the Willamette River at river mile 141 between Eugene and Corvallis. Lacking stores and services, it is a cluster of houses plus a county park along Peoria Road, about south of Oregon Route 34 and north of Harrisburg. As of the 2010 census, the population was 94. History Peoria, named for Peoria, Illinois, was first settled in 1851 by H. A. McCartney. By 1875, the community was prosperous enough to have four grain warehouses and a school with 60 pupils. ''The Brownsville Times'' is a weekly newspaper published in Brownsville, Oregon, United States. In 2014, it had a circulation of 719. History ''The Times'' was established in 1888 by Albert B. Cavender and Arthur S. McDonald, who built up a circulation of 700 in the paper's first two years. McDonald sold his ownership stake to Fred M. Brown, who later became the sole owner when Cavender also sold out. Brown operated the paper for about 25 years until selling it in 1921 to Jesse R. Hinman. A. L. Bostwick and Glenn W. Donation Land Claim Act
The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, sometimes known as the Donation Land Act, was a statute enacted by the United States Congress in late 1850, intended to promote homestead settlements in the Oregon Territory. It followed the Distribution-Preemption Act 1841. The law, a forerunner of the later Homestead Act, brought thousands of settlers into the new territory, swelling their ranks along the Oregon Trail. 7,437 land patents were issued under the law, which expired in late 1855. The Donation Land Claim Act allowed white men or partial Native Americans (mixed with white) who had arrived in Oregon before 1850 to work on a piece of land for four years and legally claim the land for themselves.
