Buriram (, , ; Northern Khmer: ) is a city municipality ('' thesaban nakhon'') in Thailand, capital of Buriram Province, about northeast of Bangkok. incorporating Nai Mueang and Isan Subdistricts and parts Samet Subdistricts of Mueang Buriram District. In 2023 it had a population of 23,364. History Almost a thousand years ago, the present-day Buriram was part of the Khmer Empire. Ruins from that time attest to its destruction. The most significant of them is on an extinct volcano and is protected in the Phanom Rung Historical Park. According to inscriptions found, Buriram's ruler recognized the hegemony of the Khmer Empire's emperor. Before the ascent of Bangkok, little was known about Buriram. Buriram province (, , ) is one of Thailand's seventy-seven Provinces of Thailand, provinces (''changwat'') and lies in Isan#Administrative divisions, lower northeastern Thailand, also called Isan. Neighboring provinces are (from south clockwise) Sa Kaeo province, Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Ratchasima province, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen province, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham province, Maha Sarakham, and Surin province, Surin. Chang International Circuit
The Buriram International Circuit (known as Chang International Circuit (ช้าง อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนล เซอร์กิต) for commercial purposes, but listed by its non-commercial name because of alcohol restrictions in some countries) is a motorsport race track in Buriram, Buriram Province, Thailand. The Buriram Stadium (known for sponsorship purposes as Chang Arena) is a 32,600-seat association football, football stadium in Buriram province, Buriram, Thailand. The stadium is the home of Buriram United F.C., Buriram United. Chang Arena is the largest club-owned football stadium in Thailand. List Of Municipalities In Thailand
Thailand divides its settlements ('' thesaban'') into three categories by size: city municipalities ('' thesaban nakhon''), towns ('' thesaban mueang'') and townships (or subdistrict municipality) (''thesaban tambon''). There are 33 city municipalities as of November 2024. The national capital Bangkok and the special governed city Pattaya fall outside these divisions. They are "self-governing districts". Due to the outdated nature of the ''thesaban'' system, any city municipality's growth subsequent to its settlement designation is not included in both area and population numbers. Buriram Hospital
Buriram Hospital () is the main hospital of Buriram Province, Thailand and is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors for the Institute of Medicine of Suranaree University of Technology and is an affiliated hospital of the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. History Buriram Hospital was first constructed in 1951 as one building with a capacity of 25 beds. It was officially opened on 10 March 1953. On 29 April 1997, the hospital became classified as a regional hospital and expanded to 520 beds. At the end of fiscal year 2000, the number of beds expanded to 590 and today the hospital has up to 895 beds in total. Phanom Rung Historical Park
Phanom Rung Historical Park is an archaeological site in Thailand, covering the ruins of Prasat Phanom Rung (, ), a Hindu Khmer Empire temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano at elevation. It is located in Buriram Province in the Isan region of Thailand, and was built at a time when Khmer social-political influences were significant in Srisaket. It was built of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolises Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling. The Phanom Rung sanctuary compound was constructed over several phases, dated by means of iconography of its art and architectural styles together with its inscriptions. Northern Khmer Dialect
Northern Khmer (; ), also called Surin Khmer (), is the dialect of the Khmer language spoken by approximately 1.4 million Khmers native to the Thai provinces of Surin, Sisaket, Buriram and Roi Et as well as those that have migrated from this region into Cambodia. Northern Khmer differs from the standard language, based on a dialect of Central Khmer, in the number and variety of vowel phonemes, consonantal distribution, lexicon, grammar, and, most notably, pronunciation of syllable-final , giving Northern Khmer a distinct accent easily recognizable by speakers of other dialects. Some speakers of Northern Khmer may understand other varieties of Khmer but speakers of standard Khmer who have not been exposed to Northern Khmer often have trouble understanding Northern Khmer at first.
