Bunić, Croatia
Bunić ( sr-Cyrl, Бунић) is a village in Lika, Croatia, located in the Udbina municipality, between Korenica and Lički Osik. The population is 133 (census 2011). History The 1712–14 census of Lika and Krbava registered 2,058 inhabitants, of whom 2,051 were Vlachs, and 7 were "Turks". In 1743 Ernst Laudon an Austrian generalisimo built a church to commemorate his children who died and were buried in Bunić and in 1746 he planted an oak forest now called by his name. The place was heavily damaged in the Second World War by the Croatian Ustashe who expelled and erased most Serbs, and greatly damaged the church. Turks (term For Muslims)
The ethnonym Turks (/''Tourkoi'', /, ) has been commonly used by the non-Muslim Balkan peoples to denote all Muslim settlers in the region, regardless of their ethno-linguistic background. Most of them, however, were indeed ethnic Turks. In the Ottoman Empire, the Islamic faith was the official religion, with Muslims holding different rights from non-Muslims. Non-Muslim ('' dhimmi'') ethno-religious legal groups were identified by different '' millets'' ("nations"). ''Turk'' was also notably used to denote all groups in the region who had been Islamized during the Ottoman rule, especially Muslim Albanians and Slavic Muslims (mostly Bosniaks). For the Balkan Christians, converting to Islam was synonymous with Turkification, succumbing to "Ottoman rule and embracing the Ottoman way of life," hence "to become a Turk". Mirjana Rakić
Mirjana Rakić (born March 7, 1948) is a Croatian journalist. Biography She spent most of her career in the editorials for foreign policy issues at TV Zagreb and later Croatian Radiotelevision. In 2005 she received the Maja Miles Prize for Journalism for her selection of topics that bring new and different sensibilities to the Croatian public space and raise the awareness about human rights and position of women at global level. In her career, among many others, she interviewed Yasser Arafat, Margaret Thatcher and Muammar Gaddafi. The Croatian Parliament appointed Mirjana Rakić as president of the Council for Electronic Media and the director of the Agency for Electronic Media on February 1, 2014, with a mandate until February 3, 2019.
