Blount County is a county located in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 59,134. Its county seat is Oneonta. Blount County is a moist county. In the November 6, 2012 elections, a countywide ballot initiative to allow alcohol sales was narrowly defeated, but Blountsville, Cleveland and Oneonta have allowed for the sale of alcohol since 2013. Area codes 205 and 659 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the western and central parts of the U.S. state of Alabama, including the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Area code 205 was one of the original North American area codes created in 1947 when AT&T created the first continental telephone numbering plan. The numbering plan area comprised the entire state, making Alabama one of 34 states served by a single area code. By the 1990s, 205 was nearing exhaustion of central office prefixes due to the state's growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. State Route 79 (SR 79) is a state highway that extends northeastward from Birmingham to the Tennessee state line. Prior to the completion of Interstate 65 (I-65), SR 79 was the southern part of the route that connected Birmingham and Huntsville. Blountsville is a town in Blount County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,684. Blount County was created by the Alabama territorial legislature on February 6, 1818, from land ceded to the federal government by the Creek Nation on August 9, 1814. It was named for Gov. Willie G.
