Brookhattan–Galicia
Brookhattan was an American soccer club based in New York City that was a member of the professional American Soccer League (ASL) from 1933 to 1962. The name is a blend of the names of Manhattan and Brooklyn where it played. It later changed its name to Brookhattan–Galicia (1948, though informally often ''Brookhattan'' thereafter), Galicia (1958), and Galicia–Honduras (1961) after Galicia in Spain and Honduras.Brucato 2001 p. 38 Formed as New York Brookhattan in 1933, it joined the first ASL and was leading the spring 1933 half-season when the league collapsed. It then joined the new ASL as Brookhattan in late 1933. In 1942 it won the Lewis Cup, and in 1945 the ASL, National Challenge Cup and Lewis Cup. In 1947, coffee importer Eugene Diaz, owner of New York Galicia, bought the Brookhattan team, withdrew Galicia from the National Soccer League of New York and transferred its players to Brookhattan. Joe Gaetjens
Joseph Edouard Gaetjens ( ; , 1924 – , 1964 resumed was a Haitian soccer player who played as a center forward. Born in Haiti, he represented its national team before and after playing for the United States team in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, in which he scored the winning goal in the 1–0 upset of England. Gaetjens won his home national championship in 1942 and 1944 with top-level Etoile Haïtienne. He then moved to the American Soccer League (ASL) and led all players with 18 goals in 15 games for New York's Brookhattan during the 1949–50 season. He was posthumously inducted into the United States National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1976. Gaetjens is among the ''Les 100 Héros de la Coupe du Monde'' ("100 Heroes of the World Cup"), which included the top 100 World Cup Players from 1930 to 1990, a list drawn up in 1994 by the France Football magazine based exclusively on their performances at World Cup level. Pito Villanon was a Cuban football player who spent eleven seasons with Brookhattan Brookhattan was an American soccer club based in New York City that was a member of the professional American Soccer League (ASL) from 1933 to 1962. The name is a blend of the names of Manhattan and Brooklyn where it played. It later changed ... in the American Soccer League. At the time, he was one of a handful of black professional athletes, playing in an integrated American sports league. He is reputedly the first black player in the American Soccer League. During his eleven seasons in the ASL, Villanon led the league in scoring twice ( 1948-49, 1952-53). He was also the 1952-53 ASL MVP. In 1948, Villanon and his teammates finished runner-up in the 1948 National Challenge Cup. They also finished runner-up in league play in 1954.
