Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart
Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart (; 15 February 1739 – 6 June 1813) was a prominent French architect, born in Paris. Biography In 1767, Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart married Anne Louise Degrémont (1744–1829). The couple became friends of the royal portrait painter, Marie Louise Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun who painted the portrait of their daughter, Emilie Louise Alexandrine Brongniart (1780–1847) that now hangs in the National Gallery in London, known as ''Mademoiselle Brongniart, 1788.'' During the Reign of Terror, Vigée-Lebrun hid in Brongniart's home before fleeing the country. Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart was also a close friend of Jean Antoine Houdon, the pre-eminent French sculptor of the day who sculpted busts of his daughter Alexandrine-Emilie and his son Alexandre Jr. that are now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Alexandre Brongniart (5 February 17707 October 1847) was a French chemist, mineralogist, geologist, paleontologist, and zoologist, who collaborated with Georges Cuvier on a study of the geology of the region around Paris. Observing fossil content as well as lithology in sequences, he classified Tertiary period, Tertiary Formation (geology), formations and was responsible for defining 19th century geological studies as a subject of science by assembling observations and classifications. Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart () FRS FRSE FGS (14 January 1801 – 18 February 1876) was a French botanist. He was the son of the geologist Alexandre Brongniart and grandson of the architect, Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart. Brongniart's pioneering work on the relationships between extinct and existing plants has earned him the title of father of paleobotany. His major work on plant fossils was his ' (1828–37). He wrote his dissertation on the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae), an extant family of flowering plants, and worked at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris until his death.
