Brompton, Scarborough
Brompton-by-Sawdon is a village in the Brompton civil parish of North Yorkshire district and county, England. The civil parish includes the village and the village of Sawdon. The village of Brompton-by-Sawdon is about west of Scarborough, close to the North York Moors and on the A170 road. It lies on the northern edge of the Vale of Pickering, with the village of Sherburn 3 miles to the south. According to the 2011 UK census, Brompton parish had a population of 573, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 516. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. Under 'Brompton', the sign on entry to the village reads 'The Birthplace Of Aviation' owing to the long-term residence of pioneering aeronautical engineer Sir George Cayley. Sherburn, North Yorkshire
Sherburn is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the south side of the Vale of Pickering, immediately north of the Yorkshire Wolds. Sherburn lies north of Weaverthorpe, south of Brompton, east of East Heslerton and west of Ganton. According to the 2011 Census. Sherburn parish had a population of 830. This was an increase on the population of 786 recorded in the 2001 UK census. History In 2011 excavations to the east of the present village uncovered the remains of a large Anglo Saxon settlement. In 1096, Sherburn was listed in the Domesday Book as within the ancient wapentake of Toreshou. By the 13th century, Sherburn parish was within Buckrose wapentake. All Saints' Church, Brompton
All Saints' Church is the parish church of Brompton, a village near Scarborough, North Yorkshire in England. The church is most famous as the location where, in 1802, William Wordsworth married Mary Hutchinson. In 2002, a festival celebrated the 200th anniversary of the wedding. There was a church on the site by the 12th century. The oldest parts of the current building are the tower and nave, which date from the 14th century, although some fragments of the earlier building are incorporated into it. The arcade, south aisle and chancel were added in the 15th century. The church was restored in 1878, and the south porch was added in 1895. The building was Grade I listed in 1967. The church is built of sandstone with a slate roof. The steeple has a tower with three stages, large diagonal buttresses, a northeast stair turret, and bell openings with ogee-headed lights and pointed hood moulds. The Borough of Scarborough () was a non-metropolitan district with borough status in North Yorkshire, England. In addition to the town of Scarborough, it covered a large stretch of the coast of Yorkshire, including Whitby and Filey. It bordered Redcar and Cleveland to the north, the Ryedale and Hambleton districts to the west and the East Riding of Yorkshire to the south. The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972. The Vale of Pickering is a low-lying flat area of land in North Yorkshire, England. It is drained by the River Derwent. The landscape is rural with scattered villages and small market towns. A170 Road
The A170 is an A road in North Yorkshire, England that links Thirsk with Scarborough through Hambleton, Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, and Pickering. The road is , and a single carriageway for almost its totality. The route has been in existence since prehistoric times and there are folk-tales about famous people from history using it.
