British Columbia Electoral Redistribution, 2008
An electoral redistribution was undertaken in 2008 in British Columbia in a process that began in late 2005 and was completed with the passage of the ''Electoral Districts Act, 2008'' on April 10, 2008. The redistribution modified most electoral boundaries in the province and increased the number of MLAs from 79 to 85. The electoral boundaries created by the redistribution were first used in the 2009 provincial election. The provincial government mandated the BC Electoral Boundaries Commission to recommend new maps (for both BC-STV and the traditional " single-member plurality" SMP systems) prior to the second electoral reform referendum. The commission's preliminary report, delivered in August 2007, was received with concern by both the New Democratic Party opposition and the governing Liberal party. Cariboo North
Cariboo North is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It was created by 1990 legislation dividing the previous two-member district of Cariboo, which came into effect for the 1991 BC election. Under the 2021 British Columbia electoral redistribution which took effect in the 2024 BC election, the district was eliminated. North Coast (provincial Electoral District)
North Coast-Haida Gwaii is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It was created under the original name North Coast by 1990 legislation which came into effect for the 1991 election, largely out of the previous riding of Prince Rupert. Following the 2021 British Columbia electoral redistribution that took effect for the 2024 election, it adopted its present name but did not undergo any boundary changes. Nelson-Creston
Kootenay Central is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It made its first appearance under the name Nelson-Creston in the general election of 1933 following a redistribution of the earlier Nelson and Creston ridings. Historically, the riding was consistently held by the "free enterprise" party of the era. Until 1952, this alternated between the BC Liberals and the Coalition, while after the election in 1952, Social Credit won every election until the BC NDP victory in 1972. Since 1972, the NDP has won all but two elections: in the 1986 election, Social Credit won the riding along with many others in the Interior and in 2001, prominent NDP Cabinet minister Corky Evans was defeated in an election that saw all but two NDP MLAs suffer defeat. Maple Ridge East is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. A riding covering a similar area, Maple Ridge-Mission, was first created in 2001 and then had its boundaries adjusted in 2008. Kelowna-Lake Country is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada, in use from 2001 to 2024.
