Britain In Europe
Until August 2005, Britain in Europe was the main British pro-European pressure group. Despite connections to Labour and the Liberal Democrats, it was a cross-party organisation with supporters from many different political backgrounds. Initially founded to campaign for a “Yes” vote for the euro, it then progressed to support a “Yes” vote for the referendum on the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. The organisation was launched in 1999 by Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Kenneth Clarke, Michael Heseltine and Charles Kennedy. In 2003, the organisation formally linked itself with the Brussels-based, pro-European, international organisation European Movement. The director of Britain in Europe was Simon Buckby and later Lucy Powell. The director of communications was the Scottish Liberal Democrat politician Danny Alexander. 2005 French European Constitution Referendum
A referendum on the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe was held in France on 29 May 2005 to decide whether the French government should ratify the proposed constitution of the European Union. The result was a victory for the "no" campaign, with 55% of voters rejecting the treaty on a turnout of 69%. France was the second country to go to the polls in a referendum on ratification, after a Spanish referendum approved the treaty by a wide margin in February, but was the first to reject the treaty. France's rejection of the Constitution left the treaty with an uncertain future, with other EU member states pledging to continue with their own arrangements for ratification. The result was surprising to political commentators, with those in favour of the "yes" vote having received 71% of mentions on television between 1 January and 31 March. British Midland Airways Limited (trading at various times throughout its history as British Midland, bmi British Midland, bmi or British Midland International) was an airline in the United Kingdom with its head office in Donington Hall in Castle Donington, close to East Midlands Airport, England. Sir Winfried Franz Wilhelm Bischoff (10 May 1941 – 25 April 2023) was a German-born British banker who was the chairman of Lloyds Banking Group. He previously served as chairman and interim CEO of Citigroup in 2007. He was succeeded as CEO by Vikram Pandit on 11 December 2007. Bischoff stepped down as chairman on 23 February 2009 and was replaced by Richard Parsons. He had dual British and German citizenship. Bischoff was knighted in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to Banking. Sushanta Kumar Bhattacharyya, Baron Bhattacharyya (6 June 1940 – 1 March 2019), was a British-Indian engineer, educator and government advisor. In 1980, he became Professor of Manufacturing Systems at the University of Warwick and founded the Warwick Manufacturing Group. Boase Massimi Pollitt (BMP) was a British advertising agency which operated between 1968 and 2004 before being renamed as DDB London. It was purchased in 1989 by the US marketing services conglomerate Omnicom. Its lineage can be directly traced to today's agency operation Adam & Eve DDB London. History BMP was founded in October 1968 by Martin Boase, Gabe Massimi, Stanley Pollitt and seven other executives who had previously worked at Pritchard Wood. The group struck out on their own after a failed attempt to buy the Pritchard Wood operation from its parent. Massimi left the firm in 1971. Amicus was a trade union in Great Britain and Ireland, primarily representing workers in the private sector. The union was established in January 2002 by the merger of Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union and the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union. Amicus was enlarged by the amalgamation of two unions, UNIFI in 2004 and the Graphical, Paper and Media Union in 2005. Amicus was affiliated to the Trades Union Congress of England and Wales, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the Scottish Trades Union Congress.
