Brewery District, Columbus
The Brewery District, traditionally known as the Old German Brewing District, is a neighborhood located in Columbus, Ohio. Located just south of the central business district and west of German Village, it is bounded by Interstate 70 on the north, South Pearl Street on the east, Greenlawn Avenue on the south, and the Scioto River on the west. History The confluence of the Scioto River, the Columbus Feeder canal, and a spring-fed ravine made this area ideal for opening breweries. The first brewery was opened by Louis Hoster, Jacob Silbernagel and George M. Herancourt in 1836. Hoster soon bought out his other two partners, and significantly increased production of the beer that bore his name. Seeing the success of the brewery, other local businessmen opened additional breweries. The Schlee Brewery Historic District is a historic district in the Brewery District neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. At the time of nomination, the site consisted of six buildings, all of which are contributing. Most are two-to-three story commercial brick buildings built between the 1860s and 1890s. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge subgenre in the United States, and the Britpop and shoegaze subgenres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Gambrinus
Gambrinus ( ) is a legendary European culture hero celebrated as an icon of beer, brewing, joviality, and '' joie de vivre''. Typical representations in the visual arts depict him as a rotund, bearded duke or king, holding a tankard or mug, and sometimes with a keg nearby. Though sometimes erroneously called a patron saint, Gambrinus is neither a saint nor a tutelary deity. It is possible his persona was conflated with traditional medieval saints associated with beermaking, like Saint Arnold of Soissons. In one legendary tradition, he is beer's inventor or envoy. Born Capital Brewery Bottling Works
The Born Capital Brewery Bottling Works is a historic building in the Brewery District of Columbus, Ohio. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The three-story building is the only remaining portion of Born Capital Brewery, once one of four German breweries in the area. The building was completed in 1895. It later became a Salvation Army thrift store. The structure was sold for redevelopment in 2007, and added to the National Register for tax credits in 2009. Redevelopment into apartments began around 2011. The $10 million project created 47 apartment units. The exterior was left largely unchanged, and interior beams and walls were kept.
