Electoral District Of Bateman
Bateman is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district shares its name with the southern Perth suburb of Bateman, situated in the central part of the electorate. Both the electorate and the suburb are named after members of the Bateman family, who established their home, "Grasmere", at nearby Bulls Creek, in 1886. The seat was created as a result of the 2007 electoral redistribution, largely replacing the former Murdoch electorate. Bateman was regarded as a safe Liberal seat, because Murdoch (itself largely replaced by Jandakot between 1989 and 1996An examination of the electoral boundaries of Murdoch and the former seat of Jandakot shows them to be similar. Cannington Railway Station
Cannington is a suburban railway station on the Armadale and Thornlie–Cockburn lines, serving the suburb of Cannington south of Perth, Western Australia. Fremantle Railway Station
Fremantle railway station is the terminus of Transperth's Fremantle line in Western Australia. History The original Fremantle station opened in Cliff Street on 1 March 1881 as the terminus of the Eastern Railway to Guildford via Perth. As the Eastern Railway was extended, its importance grew. It became an important hub for gold miners arriving in Western Australia via ship and then travelling to the Yilgarn and Eastern Goldfields when the line opened to Kalgoorlie in 1896. In 1907, a new station and marshalling yards were established 300 metres to the north-east on the site of the former Fremantle Railway Workshops to better service the newly constructed Fremantle Harbour. The station was designed by William Dartnall, Chief Engineer of Existing Lines of the Railway Department in 1905. John Bateman (Australian Settler)
John Bateman (1789 – 3 April 1855) was an early colonist at Fremantle. He was the postmaster, general store owner and an investor in the Fremantle Whaling Company. The suburb of Bateman is named after him and his family. Life Bateman was born in London, and was dealing in silk when he married Mary Ann Benningfield in 1824. They had nine children including three sons who emigrated with Bateman and his wife to the new Swan River Colony in Western Australia in 1830. They bought a plot in Fremantle in the second tranche of land made available by the Governor of Western Australia. On this acre of land Bateman built a stone residence and a general store. In 1833 he took on the job of postmaster, a position that his family carried out for many years. Bateman's eldest son, John Wesley Bateman, took an interest in the coast and as a teenager he would journey out with the American whaling ships.
