Bremer, Iowa
Bremer is a unincorporated community in Warren Township in Bremer County, Iowa, United States. Geography Bremer is located at the junction of County Roads C33 and C21. History The Bremer post office opened in June 1858, closed in November 1859, reopened in June 1888, closed again in October 1913, reopened in December 1916, and continued operation until February 1980, when it closed permanently. Bremer was founded on the Chicago Great Western Railway. A bank operated in Bremer until the Great Depression forced its closure in 1933. Bremer also once had a Missouri Synod Lutheran church. The Schrodermeier School was built one mile west of Bremer in 1902. Bremer's population was 25 in 1887, was 30 in 1902, was 52 in 1917, and was 30 in 1925. There are 99 counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The first two counties, Des Moines County and Dubuque County, were created in 1834 when Iowa was still part of the Michigan Territory. Chicago Great Western Railway
The Chicago Great Western Railway was a Class I railroad that linked Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Kansas City. It was founded by Alpheus Beede Stickney in 1885 as a regional line between St. Paul and the Iowa state line called the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad. Through mergers and new construction, the railroad, named Chicago Great Western after 1892, quickly became a multi-state carrier. One of the last Class I railroads to be built, it competed against several other more well-established railroads in the same territory, and developed a corporate culture of innovation and efficiency to survive. Nicknamed the Corn Belt Route because of its operating area in the midwestern United States, the railroad was sometimes called the Lucky Strike Road, due to the similarity in design between the herald of the CGW and the logo used for Lucky Strike cigarettes.
