Breakwater (structure)
A breakwater is a permanent structure constructed at a coastal area to protect against tides, currents, waves, and storm surges. Breakwaters have been built since antiquity to protect anchorage (maritime), anchorages, helping isolate vessels from marine hazards such as wind-driven waves. A breakwater, also known in some contexts as a jetty or a Mole_(architecture), mole, may be connected to land or freestanding, and may contain a walkway or road for vehicle access. Part of a coastal management system, breakwaters are installed parallel to the shore to minimize erosion. On beaches where longshore drift threatens the erosion of beach material, smaller structures on the beach may be installed, usually perpendicular to the water's edge. Breakwater School
Breakwater School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational school in Portland, Maine. The school currently enrolls up to 180 students from toddler through eighth grade. The sixth through eighth grade program is experiential and integrative, consisting of a series of 6 to 7 week projects completed over the course of the school year. Breakwater was founded as a day care center, named Playtime Haven, by Frank and El Costa in 1956 after their son recovered from a serious illness. As it grew, it moved to a series of different locations in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, until 1982 when it purchased its current location in Portland. Since then, the school has also been given a 21-acre nature preserve in nearby Cumberland which it uses regularly for field trips as part of the school's Science curriculum. Breakwater is an American funk band from Philadelphia. The band released two albums: ''Breakwater'' in 1978, and ''Splashdown (Breakwater album), Splashdown'' in 1980. The latter features the song "Release the Beast", which was sampled on "Robot Rock (song), Robot Rock" by electronic duo Daft Punk. Background The band, originally from Philadelphia was formed in 1971. The original members of Breakwater consisted of Gene Robinson, James Gee Jones, Lincoln 'Zay' Gilmore, Steve Green, Vince 'Garnel' Dutton, Greg Scott, John 'Dutch' Braddock, and Kae Williams, Jr. They were signed to the Arista label in 1978. Their second album ''Splashdown'', which was released in 1980 has been referred to by Tom Bowker of the ''Broward Palm Beach New Times'' as a funk masterpiece. ''Breakwater'' is a 2023 American thriller film written and directed by James Rowe and starring Dermot Mulroney, Darren Mann, Alyssa Goss, Sonja Sohn, Celia Rose Gooding, and Mena Suvari.
