Brant Parker
Brant Julian Parker (August 26, 1920 – April 15, 2007) was an American cartoonist. He co-created and drew the comic strip ''The Wizard of Id'' comic strip until passing the job on to his son, Jeff Parker, in 1997. Cartoonist Johnny Hart, his co-creator, continued writing the strip until his death on April 7, 2007. Parker himself died eight days later, on April 15. Life Parker studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. He worked for the Walt Disney Studio before and after World War II, taking time off to serve in the United States Navy. After leaving Disney in 1945, he moved to New York to work as a political cartoonist for the '' Binghamton Press''. Collaborations It was in New York that he met Johnny Hart in 1950; Parker was judging an art contest in which 18-year-old Hart was an entrant. An inkwell is a small jar or container, often made of glass, porcelain, silver, brass, or pewter, used for holding ink in a place convenient for the person who is writing. The artist or writer dips the brush, quill, or dip pen into the inkwell as needed or uses the inkwell as the source for filling the reservoir of a fountain pen. An inkwell usually has a lid to prevent contamination, evaporation, accidental spillage, and excessive exposure to air. A type known as the travelling inkwell was fitted with a secure screw lid so a traveller could carry a supply of ink in their luggage without the risk of leakage. Origins The inkwell's origins may be traced back to Ancient Egypt where scribes would write on papyrus. Knowledge of hieroglyphs was at the time highly restricted. Only scribes knew the full array of hieroglyphs and would write on the behalf of their employers, usually the pharaoh. The National Cartoonists Society (NCS) is an organization of professional cartoonists in the United States. It presents the National Cartoonists Society Awards. The Society was born in 1946 when groups of cartoonists got together to entertain the troops. They enjoyed each other's company and decided to meet on a regular basis. NCS members work in many branches of the profession, including advertising, animation, newspaper comic strips and syndicated single-panel cartoons, comic books, editorial cartoons, gag cartoons, graphic novels, greeting cards, magazine and book illustration. Only recently has the National Cartoonists Society embraced web comics. Bill Rechin
William J. Rechin (August 20, 1930 – May 21, 2011), better known as Bill Rechin, was an American cartoonist who created the sports-themed comic strips ''Out of Bounds'' and the French Foreign Legion humor comic '' Crock''. Born in Buffalo, New York, Rechin studied art at Buffalo's Albright Academy of Art, where he met his wife, Trish. He drew his first strip, ''Pluribus'', in 1971. In 1975, Rechin, Don Wilder (1934–2008) and Brant Parker launched '' Crock'', a strip depicting the French Foreign Legion. Wilder and Rechin began their ''Out of Bounds'' strip in 1986. Rechin lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia with his wife. The couple had seven children and eight grandchildren. He died of esophageal cancer on May 21, 2011.
