Brad, Hunedoara
Brad (; ; ) is a municipiu, city in Hunedoara County in the Transylvania region of Romania. Its name comes from the Romanian language, Romanian word ''Wiktionary:brad, brad'', "fir". Geography The city is located in the northern part of the county, at the foot of the Metaliferi Mountains. It lies in the valleys of the river Crișul Alb and its tributaries, Brad (Crișul Alb), Brad and Luncoiu River, Luncoiu. Five villages are administered by the city: Mesteacăn ("birch"; ''Mesztákon''), Potingani (''Pottingány''), Ruda-Brad (''Ruda''), Țărățel (''Cerecel'') and Valea Bradului ("the valley of the fir tree"; ''Vályabrád''). History A gold mine in the area began to be exploited in Roman Dacia, Roman times, and the town developed around it. The earliest documentary mention of Brad dates to 1445. Municipiu
A municipiu (from Latin ''municipium''; English: municipality) is a level of administrative subdivision in Romania and Moldova, roughly equivalent to city in some English-speaking world, English-speaking countries. In Romania, this status is given to towns that are large and urbanized; at present, there are 103 ''municipii''. There is no clear benchmark regarding the status of ''municipiu'' even though it applies to localities which have a sizeable population, usually above 15,000, and extensive urban infrastructure. Localities that do not meet these loose guidelines are classified only as towns (''orașe''), or if they are not urban areas, as Commune in Romania, communes (''comune''). Cities are governed by a mayor and local council. There are no official administrative subdivisions of cities even though, unofficially, municipalities may be divided into quarters/districts (''cartiere'' in Romanian language, Romanian). Ileana Stana-Ionescu (14 September 1936 – 30 June 2024) was a Romanian actress and politician. She was born in Brad, Hunedoara and made her debut in theatre in 1955. László Pataky
László Pataky (24 December 1857, Brad, Hunedoara, Brád - 4 March 1912, Vințu de Jos, Alvinc) was a painter from Austria-Hungary who specialized in rural Genre art, genre scenes. Life and work He initially studied at the arts and crafts school in Budapest then after 1880, at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich with Karl von Piloty as his primary instructor. He continued his education in Paris and, from 1883 to 1889, travelled between Paris, Budapest and Munich. In 1888, he was awarded a scholarship for his painting "The Messenger", which enabled him to study with Mihály Munkácsy. In addition to working in his studio, he helped him create his monumental painting, "Hungarian Conquest", for the Hungarian Parliament Building. When that was completed, he returned to his home province and settled in Alvinc. Teodor Meleșcanu
Teodor Viorel Meleșcanu (; born 10 March 1941) is a Romanian politician, diplomat, and jurist. He served as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Romania (SIE) between 2012 and 2014. He was a three times senator on behalf of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Minister of Defense between 2007 and 2008, and Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1992 and 1996, in November 2014 and since January 2017 to July 2019. On 27 February 2012, upon his appointment as head of the SIE, he suspended himself from PNL and was later expelled from the party. On 10 September 2019, he was elected President of the Senate. Florin Sandu Maxim (born 2 March 1981) is a Romanian professional football manager and former player who played as a left-back, currently in charge of Liga II club Corvinul Hunedoara. Ilarion Felea
Ilarion V. Felea (March 21, 1903 – September 18, 1961) was a priest and theologian of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Felea was born in Valea Bradului, a village that today is incorporated into Brad city in Hunedoara County. His father was a priest. From 1910 to 1914, he attended primary school in his native village, followed from 1914 to 1920 by Avram Iancu High School in Brad. From 1920 to 1922, by which time his native Transylvania has united with Romania, he attended Moise Nicoară National College in Arad, taking his degree there. Felea studied at the theological academy in Sibiu from 1922 to 1926, earning his diploma at the end. From 1926 to 1927, he was a substitute teacher at Avram Iancu in Brad. Cătălin Bălescu (born January 6, 1962) is a Romanian visual artist and a university professor at the Department of Painting of The National University of Arts in Bucharest. Bălescu is the rector of The National University of Arts in Bucharest (elected in 2012).
