The men's middleweight event was part of the Boxing at the 1956 Summer Olympics, boxing programme at the 1956 Summer Olympics. The weight class was allowed boxers of up to 75 kilograms to compete. Festival Hall (Melbourne)
Festival Hall is a heritage listed entertainment venue located at 300 Dudley Street, West Melbourne, Victoria, West Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. Festival Hall first opened its doors in 1913 as a roller-skating rink and later became a boxing arena. History The site began its sporting history as the West Melbourne Stadium (shortened to The Stadium) in 1913, developed by R.L.Baker, the Sydney boxing promoter, opening just in time for the Mehegan-Wells fight of 3 November 1913. In 1915 it came under the control of John Wren (chairman) and Dick Lean (general manager) of Stadiums Limited as a multi-function venue for boxing and pro wrestling. Gennadi Shatkov
Gennadi Ivanovich Shatkov (, May 27, 1932 – January 14, 2009) was a boxer from the USSR, who competed in the Middleweight division (– 75 kg) during the major part of his career. Biography Shatkov was born in Leningrad and began boxing at 12 at Zhdanov Young Pioneer Palace in Leningrad, where he was trained by Ivan Pavlovich Osipov. His first success was the 3rd place at the 1949 USSR Youth Championship in Rostov on Don. Shatkov trained at Burevestnik in Leningrad. He became Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1957 and was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1957. During his career he won 215 fights out of 227. He won the Middleweight (75 kg) gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games. Howard Richter
Howard Richter (born 18 May 1935) is an Australian businessman and former Olympic boxer. Sporting career Richter was introduced to boxing as a method of rehabilitation following a severe accident when he was eight years old. He was struck by a milk truck and spent six weeks in a coma. He later also broke his neck playing rugby league. Richter competed in the men's middleweight event at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He lost in the first round to 1948 welterweight gold medallist Julius Torma on a points decision. Politics Richter was Queensland state president of the Young Country Party in 1959, in which capacity he escorted Princess Alexandra on a royal tour. Július Torma
Július Torma (7 March 1922, Budapest – 23 October 1991, Prague) was a Slovaks, Slovak boxing, boxer competing for Czechoslovakia. He won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1948 for Czechoslovakia in the category up to 67 kg. He competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics (1948, 1952 and 1956). Torma defeated Hank Herring of the United States in the 1948 final. Torma also competed as a welterweight in 1952, losing in the quarterfinals; and in 1956, as a Middleweight. Dieter Wemhöner (born 18 August 1930) is a former amateur boxing middleweight who won a gold medal at the 1953 European Amateur Boxing Championships. He represented West Germany in the Boxing at the 1952 Summer Olympics#Middleweight (-75kg), 1952 Olympics, reaching the third round; and the United Team of Germany at the Boxing at the 1956 Summer Olympics#Middleweight (75 kg), 1956 Olympics, reaching the second round. Giulio Rinaldi
Giulio Rinaldi (13 February 1935 – 16 July 2011) was an Italian boxer. He competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics where he was eliminated in the first bout. Pro career During his thirteen and-a-half-year professional career from 1957 to 1970, Rinaldi compiled a record of 44–16–5, with 13 knockouts. He won the Italian light heavyweight title in 1960, and defeated Archie Moore in a non-title bout the same year. In June 1961, Rinaldi lost a 15-round decision in a rematch with Moore for the NYSAC World Light Heavyweight title. He then went undefeated in ten consecutive fights, and went on to decision 34–0–4 Erich Schoppner over 15 rounds to win the European Light Heavyweight title in 1963.
