Boxing At The 2011 Pan American Games – Light Welterweight
The men's light welterweight competition of the boxing events at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, was held between October 21 and 28 at the Expo Guadalajara Arena. The defending champion was Karl Dargan from the United States. Light welterweights were limited to those boxers weighing less than or equal to 64 kilograms. Like all Pan American boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. Both semifinal losers were awarded bronze medals, so no boxers competed again after their first loss. Bouts consisted of four rounds of two minutes each, with one-minute breaks between rounds. Punches scored only if the white area on the front of the glove made full contact with the front of the head or torso of the opponent. Five judges scored each bout; three of the judges had to signal a scoring punch within one second for the punch to score. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 Ibs. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1922, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Doxing Dlade'' magazine. There was not widespread acceptance of this new weight division in its early years, and the New York State Athletic Commission withdrew recognition of it in 1930. Fabián Andrés Maidana (born 22 June 1992) is an Argentine professional boxer. As an amateur, he won a silver medal at the 2010 Youth World Championships and a bronze at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. He is the younger brother of former two-division world champion Marcos Maidana. Anderson Rojas is an amateur boxer from Ecuador who has qualified for the 2012 Olympics as a light welterweight. Anderson was a quarter-finalist and 5th-place finisher at middleweight at the 2012 American Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. Five spots were available for qualification at light welterweight and Anderson qualified over the other quarter-finalists since his loss was to the eventual winner Roniel Iglesias.
