The men's heavyweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1988 Summer Olympics. The weight class allowed boxers of up to 91 kilograms to compete. The competition was held from 22 September to 1 October 1988. 18 boxers from 18 nations competed. 27-year-old Ray Mercer, who took up boxing only four years prior, won the gold medal. Jamsil Students' Gymnasium
Jamsil Students' Gymnasium () is an indoor arena, indoor sporting arena located in Seoul, South Korea. The capacity of the arena is 7,500 and was built from November 1972 to December 1976 to host Boxing at the 1988 Summer Olympics, Boxing events at the 1986 Asian Games and 2-years later the same sport on the 1988 Summer Olympics, and wheelchair basketball events at the 1988 Summer Paralympics. The arena's name is derived from the fact that it owned by the Korea University Sports Federation, and usually host university sports events, most notably the annual MBC Cup for college basketball teams. Svilen Rusinov
Svilen Aldinov Rusinov (; born February 29, 1964, in Teteven) is a Bulgarian boxer, who twice competed at the Summer Olympics for his native country. As an amateur he won a bronze medal in the super heavyweight division (+ 91 kg) at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. He also won the European Championship in 1993 and was twice runner up in the World Amateur Championships. During his extensive amateur career Rusinov consistently competed at the highest level and boxed a number of amateur and future professional boxing greats. He holds wins over Vitali Klitschko and 3 times Olympic champion Felix Savon, as well as a close loss to Wladimir Klitschko. Andrzej Golota
Andrzej Jan Gołota (; born 5 January 1968), best known as Andrew Golota, is a Polish former professional boxer who competed from 1992 to 2013. He challenged four times for a heavyweight world title (by all four major sanctioning bodies), and as an amateur won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1988 Olympics. Despite his accomplishments and more than 40 professional wins, Golota is perhaps best known for twice being disqualified against Riddick Bowe for repeated low blows in fights that Golota was winning. On October 4, 1997, he became the first Pole to challenge for a heavyweight boxing crown when he fought WBC champion Lennox Lewis at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Claus Illemann Nielsen (born 13 January 1964), known as Claus Nielsen, is a Danish former football player in the forward position. He spent the bulk of his career with Brøndby, but also played for the Greek club Panathinaikos and the Dutch club Twente. Club career Brøndby Nielsen played for Brøndby from July 1984 until July 1988, at the top level 1.Division in Denmark (later renamed Superliga in 1991). José Ortega Chumilla (born October 2, 1963 in Yecla, Murcia) is a former Boxing, boxer from Spain, who represented his native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain he was eliminated in the second round of the heavyweight division (– 91 kg) by New Zealand's David Tua. Henry Adetokunboh Akinwande (born 12 October 1965) is a British former WBO boxing world champion who competed from 1989 to 2008. He held the WBO heavyweight title from 1996 to 1997, as well as the Commonwealth heavyweight title in 1993, and the European heavyweight title from 1993 to 1994.
